Ursus first came into being as an independent satellite town of Warsaw at the end of the First World War, in connection with plans to create an engineering and weapons industry after Poland regained its independence. The plan for the development of an industrial area and communications infrastructure in the western part of Warsaw at that time included construction of a large engineering industry centre on the site of the existing villages Czechowice, Skorosze and Szamotuły. Construction of the “Ursus” Mechanical Works began in 1923 next to Czechowice and the railway line running through it, first producing machinery for the army, and from the 1930s armoured vehicles and tanks. A process of urbanization, whereby the old individual houses in the area were replaced with new standardized structures, accompanied the developing industry.
The executed part referred to the Warsaw modernism and the buildings themselves were designed by well known architects. Along the current Traktorzystów street foundry and heat treatment department halls were located and front office building of assembly department. The water tower and a number of ancillary buildings were built. A large part of the buildings associated with the production machine exists untill today. These are the halls of red brick with a steel frame. The building of the former model is example of particular interest buildings. It is located at side of Cierlicka street. It has articulation utilizing raster sand-lime brick – Warsaw characteristic of industrial architecture of 30s. Some of the old buildings have been listed in the register of monuments. Buildings, some abandoned provides residence for homeless people in the winter. There are, however, recent attempts to cancel them from the register as a result pression to clean attractive land in the district center…
Ursus, podobnie jak Włochy był niezależnym miast satelitarnym Warszawy pod koniec pierwszej wojny światowej, w związku z planami na rzecz stworzenia przemysłu maszynowego i broni po tym, jak Polska odzyskała niepodległość. Plan rozwoju strefy przemysłowej i infrastruktury łączności, w zachodniej części Warszawy w tym czasie obejmował budowę dużego centrum przemysłu maszynowego na terenie istniejących wiosek Czechowic, Skoroszy, Szamotów. Budowa Zakładów Mechanicznych "Ursus" rozpoczęła się w 1923 na terenie Szamotów, przy linii kolejowej. Najpierw otwarto tam produkcję zaworów i zasów, wyposażenia wojskowego, a od 1930 pojazdów pancernych i czołgów. Proces urbanizacji okolicy postępował, przy czym poszczególne stare domy w okolicy były zastępowane nowymi domami bliźniaczymi i indywidualnymi oraz zaplanowanym na terenie Czechowic osiedlem pracowniczym.
Powstała część zakładów nawiązywała do warszawskiego modernizmu a same budynki były projektowane przez znanych architektów warszawskich. Wzdłóż dzisiejszej ul. Traktorzystow usytuwane zostały hale odlewni i wydziału obróbki termicznej oraz frontowy budynek biurowy montowni. Powstała wieża ciśnień i liczne budynki pomocnicze. Spora część budynków związanych z produkcją maszynową istnieje do dziś. Są to hale z czerwonej cegły ze stalową konstrukcją. Szczególnie interesujący jest budynek dawnej modelarni położony przy ul. Cierlickiej. Posiada artykulację rastru cegły silikatowej – charakterystyczną dla warszawskiej architektury przemysłowej lat 30. Kilka z dawnych budynków zostało wpisanych do rejestru zabytków. Budynki, częściowo opuszczone stają się miejscem zamieszkania bezdomnych w okresie zimowym. Pojawiają się jednak ostatnio próby wykreślenia ich z rejestru będące wynikiem usiłowań oczyszczenia, atrakcyjnego gruntu w centrum dzielnicy.
