Le 22 décembre 1960, un avalanche endommagea gravement l'église. Les villageois s'unirent pour des travaux de réfection, qui débutèrent en novembre 1962.
Du point de vue architectural, l’église de Gouaux a perdu son aspect roman. Mais un chrisme, proche de celui de Poubeau par son association avec un symbole assez similaire (fleur de lys ?), est encastré dans le mur extérieur méridional. L’intérieur abrite un témoin précieux de l’art vernaculaire, propre à la vallée et à ses petites paroisses montagnardes souvent pauvres. Toutes les communautés de fidèles n’avaient pas les moyens de recourir à un atelier de sculpteurs. Installé dans le choeur où il sert de croix d’autel, un tympan représente le Christ en croix entre deux personnages, les deux larrons. Il date du XIe siècle.

Cuando descubrimos la iglesia de Saint Exupère, in Gouaux de Larboust, era engalanada muy bonitamente para un matrimonio. Hemos sido seducidos por el encanto antiguo de esta iglesia romance. Según las informaciones que pudimos recoger, es abierta durante el día: basta con empujar un botón. En el interior, podrán descubrir un decorado muy particular, aliando barroco y romance. Podrán también leer su historia:
El 22 de diciembre de 1960, avalancha dañó gravemente la iglesia. Los aldeanos se unieron para trabajos de refacción, que empezaron en noviembre de 1962.
Desde el punto de vista arquitectónico, la iglesia de Gouaux ha perdido su aspecto románico. Sin embargo, en la pared exterior meridional hay un crismón encastrado, similar al de Poubeau por su asociación con un símbolo bastante parecido (¿una flor de lis?).El interior alberga un valioso ejemplar del arte vernáculo, del valle y de sus pequeñas parroquias de montaña, a menudo bastante pobres. De hecho, no todas las comunidades de fieles tenían los medios de recurrir a un taller de escultores. Un tímpano instaladoen el coro, donde sirve de cruz de altar, representa a Cristo en la cruz entre dos personajes, los dos ladrones. Es del siglo 11.

When we discovered the church of St. Exupère, in Gouaux de Larboust, it was nicely adorned for a wedding. We were attracted by the charm of the old Romanesque church. According to the information we have collected, it is open during the day: just push a button. Inside, you will discover a very special decoration, combining baroque and Romanesque. On 22 December 1960, an avalanche severely damaged the church. Villagers united for renovations, which began in November 1962.
From an architectural viewpoint, the church at Gouaux has lost its Romanesque appearance. But a chrismon set in the outside of the south wall is very similar to the one at Poubeau through its association with a comparable symbol (possibly a fleur de lys).
Inside there is a precious example of vernacular art, typical of the valley and its small mountain parishes which were often poor. Not all congregations of the faithful could afford to hire skilled sculptors. A tympanum has been reused in the choir where it plays the role of altar Cross, showing Christ crucified between two other figures, the two thieves. It dates from the eleventh century.
