Lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, les Allemands occupaient les hauteurs de Cernay-les-Reims, les bois du Mont de Berru.
L'observation du relief, notamment depuis la route venant de Reims, vous confirmera que le Mont de Berru était bel et bien une position stratégique sur la ville des Sacres. De là, les Allemands dominaient la Vallée de la Vesle et les tours de la cathédrale constituaient une formidable cible pour le réglage des tirs de l’artillerie allemande, bien cachée sous le couvert végétal.
Situé à l’orée des bois, le cimetière militaire allemand ouvert en 1923 rassemble les dépouilles de 17 559 soldats dont 4 501 en ossuaire, provenant d’une large zone géographique s’étendant de Fismes aux confins de l’Argonne et de Châtillon-sur-Marne à Berry-au-Bac.
Le cimetière est ombragé de bouleaux, de hêtres et de pins noirs d’Autriche qui forment une continuité végétale avec le bois de Berru, d’autant qu’aucune clôture ne l’en sépare. Il est d’ailleurs intéressant de pénétrer quelque peu dans les sous bois pour découvrir les trous d’obus à peine recouverts par la végétation et les amorces du réseau de tranchée mis en place par les troupes allemandes au cours du conflit.
Ce lieu est un hommage aux soldats allemands morts pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il s’agit d’un cimetière très bien entretenu, comme tous les lieux de recueillement. Soyez discrets, la cache est en bordure du cimetière.

During the First World War, the Germans occupied the heights of Cernay-les-Reims, the woods of Berru Mount.Looking out from the relief, especially from the road coming from Reims, you’ll see why Berru Mount was well and truly a strategic position over the City of Coronations. From there, the Germans overlooked the Vesle Valley, and the towers of the cathedral made an excellent target for the Germans to adjust their artillery fire, well hidden under the green cover.
Located at the edge of the woods, the German Military Cemetery opened in 1923 holds the remains of 17,559 soldiers, 4,501 of which in ossuary, stemming from a large geographical zone stretching from Fismes to the fringes of Argonne and Châtillon-sur-Marne in Berry-au-Bac.The cemetery is shaded by birch, beech and Austrian black pine trees, which are in keeping with the vegetation of the Berru woods, so much so that no enclosure separates it. It is also interesting to venture a little into the undergrowth, to discover the shell holes that have barely been covered by plant growth, and the beginnings of the network of trenches set up by the German troops during the war.
This place is a tribute to the German soldiers who died in the First World War. As with all places of reverence, the cemetery is very well-maintained. Be discreet, the cache is at the edge of the cemetery.
