Not widely known, the career of Vaux presents a remarkable natural heritage. Here, geology and paleontology - the science of fossils - are queens.
Also, the Regional Park Normandy-Maine, site owner, proposed to the Regional Council of Lower Normandy
its ranking regional nature reserve.
For our geological heritage does not sink into oblivion ...
In the former limestone quarry of
Vaux located in the commune of Saint-Hilaire-la-Gérard (Orne), facing the massive Ecouves lies a site géologiqued'exception, unique scientific interest.
This is one of two limestone outcrops of Armorican dating from about 445 million years (late Ordovician), the only region in Lower Normandy (the other being located on the peninsula from Sligo, the tip of Brittany). In addition to the rarity of its rocks, the presence of many
fossil is the other major advantage of the site.
Seventeen species of "Conodonts" were counted!
