C’est en 1780 que Philibert Commerson indroduit du Japon le premier plant qu’il baptisa Hortensia en hommage à une femme de son entourage nommée Hortense. Depuis ils appartiennent à notre patrimoine tant ils ont investi les pieds de nos murs et talus. Ces grosses boules, les plus connues, sont les hortensias des nos grand-mères (plus de 300 variétés). Pourtant ce n’est pas la seule espèce à s’acclimater dans nos jardins. 250 autres variétés méritent d’être connues.
Pendant votre promenade, découvrez les plus beaux specimens de la plante symbole de la Bretagne! Le long des berges du Lac au Duc, un des plus grands lac de Bretagne, 5500 Hydrangeas et 550 variétés s’épanouissent de juin à octobre.
Roses, bleues, mauves, blanches au cœur jaune soleil, bicolores….
De la pus petite et délicate espèce à de véritables arbres à fleurs, chaque variété, plantée en massif parmi des arbustes et des plantes vivaces, est identifée par un petit pupitre. Les 14 principales espèces sont, elles, présentées sur des pierres de schiste.

In 1780, Philibert Commerson introduced, from Japan, the first young plant that he called Hortensia in homage to a woman named Hortense. Since then, they belong to our heritage so much as they are everywhere at the feet of our walls and slopes. The most widely known of these big flower heads are the hydrangeas of our grandmothers (more than 300 varieties). However it is not the only kind to become acclimatised in our gardens. 250 other varieties are worthy of note.
During your walk, discover one of the symbols of Brittany and the nicest specimens of the plant! Along the banks of the Lac au Duc, one of the biggest lakes in Brittany, 5500 Hydrangeas and 550 varieties bloom from June till October.

From the smallest and delicate species to the true flowering tree, each variety planted in amongst the trees as shrubs, is identified by a small plaque. The 14 main species are marked with a stone of “schiste”.
