SÉRIE 'O BRASIL NAS COPAS DO MUNDO' - Jogador #3: Garrinha - "O Anjo das Pernas Tortas"
Em 2014, a Copa do Mundo de Futebol foi disputada no Brasil. Esta série de caches tem o objetivo de celebrar este evento e repassar a história da seleção brasileira nas Copas do Mundo, do Campeonato de 1958 ao Pentacampeonato de 2002 e, quem sabe, o Hexacampeonato em 2018, na Rússia.
Dado que estamos aqui falando de futebol, foram selecionados, para esta série, 11 jogadores, representativos de cada um dos 5 campeonatos ganhos pelo Brasil desde 1958. Para cada campeonato ganho, 2 jogadores, num total de 10 jogadores, dos quais 1 é goleiro. E, para representar o conjunto da obra brasileira nas copas do mundo, o Rei do Futebol: Edson Arantes do Nascimento, o Pelé.
A escolha dos jogadores obedeceu a um critério: a relevância ou representatividade daquele jogador para a história do futebol brasileiro, no humilde entendimento do owner desta série de caches! O objetivo não é montar a "seleção brasileira dos sonhos" pois este owner sabe que, a depender das preferências individuais de cada um, a discussão poderia ser eterna.

JOGADOR #3: Garrincha - "O Anjo das Pernas Tortas"
Manuel Francisco dos Santos nasceu 28 de outubro de 1933, no distrito de Pau Grande (sic), município de Magé/RJ. As árvores por ali eram frequentemente habitadas por pássaros da espécie Troglodytes Musculus. Esta ave, que em outros lugares do Brasil geralmente é conhecida pelo nome Corruíra, ali era mais conhecida por outro nome: Garrincha. Foi a irmã de Manuel que o teria apelidado desta forma. E, da fusão dos nomes do jogador e do pássaro, foi que surgiu a lenda: Mané Garrincha.
Garrincha tinha as pernas tortas: a perna esquerda era 6 centímetros mais curta que a outra e dobrada para a direita; a perna direita era o espelho da esquerda, exceto que mais longa. É de espantar que aquelas pernas tortas fossem capazes de jogar futebol, mas a verdade é que produziram alguns dos mais belos dribles e lances do futebol brasileiro. Diz-se que há zagueiros por aí que estão até hoje procurando a bola, especialmente alguns tchecoslovacos de 1962!
Garrincha jogou praticamente toda sua carreira no Botafogo e eternizou sua fama nas Copas do Mundo de 1958 e 1962. Atualmente, a lenda dá seu nome ao Estádio Mané Garrincha, em Brasília, capital do país.
O Anjo das Pernas Tortas se foi aos 49 anos. Seu corpo foi velado num caixão sob a bandeira do Botafogo. A seguinte frase lhe serviu de epitáfio: “Aqui jaz em paz aquele que foi a Alegria do Povo – Mané Garrincha”.
Hoje em dia, quem visita Magé poderá encontrar um busto em homenagem a Garrincha, no distrito onde ele nasceu (Street View: S22 34.947 W043 10.082)

'BRAZIL IN THE WORLD CUPS' GEOCACHE SERIES
In 2014, the World Cup of Soccer took place in Brazil. The objective of this cache series is to celebrate that event and review the history of the Brazilian national team in the World Cups, from the first victory in 1958 up to the fifth one in 2002 and, who knows, the 6th one in 2018, in Russia.
Given that we’re speaking about football here, a total of 11 players were picked for this cache series, representing each one of the 5 world cups won by Brazil since 1958. For each championship won, 2 players; 10 in total, 1 of them a goalkeeper. And, representing the Brazilian national team assembled conquests in the World Cups, the King of Football: Edson Arantes do Nascimento, aka Pelé.
The players’ selection followed one criterion: the relevance or representativeness of each player to the Brazilian soccer history, in the humble opinion of this series’ cache owner! The objective is not to assemble the “all time Brazilian national dream team” because this owner know that, depending on each one’s particular preferences, there would be eternal discussion!
BTW: thinking on the development of a ‘tourist friendly’ cache series, any information needed to solve the mysteries in this cache series can be found in English over the internet – a nicely done Google search, even with an English input, will do it – believe me, I’ve tested it!
You may pursue the whole series in one single sequence or to pick your favorite players to go after, as you prefer. If you want to go after the whole series, it is recommended to do it in the same order of the players and to be prepared for a 3km walk

PLAYER #3: Garrincha - "The Angel with Crooked Legs"
Manuel Francisco dos Santos was born October 28, 1933 in the district of Pau Grande, municipality of Mage / RJ. The trees around there were often inhabited by birds of the species Troglodytes musculus. This bird, which in other places in Brazil is generally known as Corruíra (wren), there was better known by another name: Garrincha. It was Manuel’ sister who would have nicknamed him this way. And by the merging of the player’s and the bird’s name, the legend was born: Mané Garrincha.
Garrincha had crooked legs, his left leg was 6 cm shorter than the other and bent to the right, and the right leg its twin’s mirror, except longer. It is surprising that these crooked legs were able to play football, but the truth is that produced some of the finest tricks and moves of Brazilian football. It is said that there are some defenders out there who are still looking for the ball today, especially some 1962 Czechoslovaks!
Garrincha played almost his entire career in Botafogo and immortalized his fame in the World Cups of 1958 and 1962. Currently, the legend lends his name to the Mané Garrincha Stadium, in Brasilia, the country’s capital city.
The Angel with Crooked Legs lived for 49 years. His coffin was covered with the banner of Botafogo. The following sentence became his epitaph: "Here rests in peace he who was the Joy of the People - Mane Garrincha".
Nowadays, those who visit Magé will find a sculpture of Garrincha's bust, in the district where he was born (Street View: S22 34.947 W043 10.082)
