This is one of a series of 5 caches that make up the "Horace Greeley History Hunt 2.0" created by the New Castle Historical Society, located in Chappaqua, NY, to promote interest in local history and awareness of our town’s remarkable open land. All five will be logged separately. In each of the first four (found in any order), you will find a clue in the form of a token. Take one token from each cache. Once you have all four, use them to find the fifth, bonus cache.
Sunny Ridge Preserve The Sunny Ridge Preserve is New Castle’s newest park which opened in April 2008. It is an 82 acre preserve with 2.5 miles of walking trails on Route 134 just west of Grace Lane. This preserve adjoins greenspace and is at the south end of a virtually uninterrupted greenway and tail system that stretches north through Teatown Lake Preservation and the open space lands which surround the New Croton Reservoir. At the southern end of the preserve there is a three acre pond. And on the western side of the property is the highest elevation from which there are three-season views of the Hudson River.
The property was part of Elda Castle, the country estate of David T. Abercrombrie (1867-1931), a wealthy Brooklyn Heights resident and his family. Mr. Abercrombie was a former trapper, prospector, topographer and railroad surveyor. He was an inventor, an ingenious designer of tents, rucksacks and other camping equipment. In 1892 Abercrombie & Fitch began under the name David T. Abercrombie Co, a small waterfront shop and factory in New York City. By 1917 it had moved to Madison Avenue and 45th street and was known as the largest sporting goods store in the world.
The header coordinates are for the parking lot of the preserve and have nothing to do with this cache.
