The Red Mountain lookout was once described by the Forest service as “unquestionably the best lookout point” in the Southern Washington Cascades. At 4,965 feet, the summit of Red Mountain commands sweeping views of the Indian Heaven wilderness area and several Cascade peaks. The current lookout was built in 1959 and recently rebuilt by volunteers after high winds nearly destroyed it. For more information about the history of the lookout check out this web site-http://www.firelookout.org/red-mountain.pdf There are several ways to get to the lookout, the easiest being a walk or mt. bike ride on FS 6048. The lookout sits at the southern point of the Indian Heaven wilderness, with some of the best hiking in the area. The lookout is no longer used by the forest service to spot fires but I read of plans to turn it into a rental “cabin”.
I placed the new cache close to where the old one was. A big thanks to the Chubby Forest Monkey for sending me a link to the old cache, GCP9QX that Kingbird56 placed in 2005.
