The information provided below is now out of date. Some time in the winter of 2013 the rail cars were removed and when I checked on the cache on 5/4/2013 the real reason for the cache name was gone. I plan on keeping the story just because I thought it was interesting. But there isn't really anything interesting to see here now except the countryside.
The cache you are seeking is a simple cache and dash along Culhane Rd in Penn Yan NY. I brought you to this location to tell you a story I heard this past spring that I though was interesting. The train tracks that are just to the west of your location were once part of the Northern Central Railway. The Northern Central Railway later was bought out by the The Pennsylvania Railroad, which has been called one of the largest and most influential railroads in American History. This section of railroad runs from Williamsburg PA north through Elmira NY, Watkins Glen, Penn Yan, Newark, and ends on the shores of Lake Ontario in Sodus Point. The section of rail from Flint NY to Sodus Point was removed years ago. The last passenger train to go through Penn Yan departed in the early 1950’s. There was limited freight service from Penn Yan until the early 1990’s. The section of track in front of you has been quiet for over 20 years. In the summer of 2011 when the current owner of the tracks received a contract for long term storage of the freight cars you can see, they came to Penn Yan to see what the condition of the tracks were. They found that most of the rail-crossings in the village had been paved over. So work began to restore the crossings to their original function. When the people of town saw that the roads were being ripped up, they filed an injunction in court to stop the work. As you can see, the courts ruled in favor of the railroad. Many farmers that have fields to the north of here have been moving equipment across the tracks for 20-30 years without problems. There are now 200-250 rail cars sitting in their way. Many other land owners that purchased land with views of the valley below, now have a train obstructing their views.
The cache you are seeking is a simple cache and dash. At the top of the log you will see a letter – number code. Write this code down and keep it. You’ll need it in the future for a Mystery Cache we have hidden. Please bring your own pen or pencil.
