Dzelzcela linija Riga – Jelgava tika atklata 1868. gada 21. novembri. Sakotneji linija bija ierikotas cetras stacijas. Rigas stacija bija novietota Daugavas kreisaja krasta, Akmenu iela. Tornakalna, Olaines un Jelgavas stacijas izvietojums palicis nemainigs. Kopš 1873. gada 1. februara pasažieru vilcieni Jelgavas virziena saka kurset no Rigas – Bolderajas dzelzcela stacijas Daugavas labaja krasta, kas atradas uz tagadejas 13. janvara ielas. 1914. gada pasažieru vilcieni Jelgavas virziena saka kurset no Rigas galvenas (centralas) pasažieru stacijas. No ta briža attalums starp Rigas un Jelgavas stacijam pa sliežu celu ir 43 kilometri (sakotneji 41,5 kilometrs).

1894. gada valsts atpirka Rigas – Jelgavas dzelzcelu no privatas sabiedribas un kopš 1895. gada ta ekspluatacija tika uzticeta Rigas – Orlas dzelzcela parvaldei. 1915. gada kontroli par Jelgavas staciju un dalu linijas parnema vacu armija, kas parverta to sliežu celus Rietumeiropas jeb normalplatuma (1435 milimetri). 1919. gada kontroli par liniju parnema nacionala kompanija «Latvijas dzelzceli», atstajot vienu sliežu celu normalplatuma, bet otru – 1524 milimetru jeb «krievu» platuma. 1940. gada linija pargaja PSRS Satiksmes celu ministrijas formejuma «Latvijas dzelzcelš» parraudziba. Tas uzdevuma normalplatuma celu parlaboja «krievu» platuma. 1941.gada vacu armija abus linijas celus parverta normalplatuma, bet 1944. gada PSRS armijas speki atjaunoja vienu celu 1524 mm. Otrs celš (ari krievu platuma) pilniba tika atjaunots pec 1972. gada pabeigtas Rigas – Jelgavas linijas elektrifikacijas.

Savukart Jelgavas stacijas eku uzcela 1889. gada. Otra pasaules kara beigas, bombardejot Jelgavu, eka tika bojata. Tas pirma rekonstrukcija notika 1945. gada, bet nakama — 1962. gada.

Opening of the line Riga-Jelgava took place on 21 November 1868. Originally there were opened four stations in the line. Riga station was situated on the left coast of Daugava, in Akmens street. Location of Tornakalns, Olaine and Jelgava stations has remained the same. Since 1 February 1873 passenger trains started to run in the direction to Jelgava from Riga – Bolderaja railway station on the right coast of Daugava, which was located in the existing 13.janvara street. Since 1914 passenger trains started to run in the direction to Jelgava from Riga (central) passenger station. Since then line distance between Riga and Jelgava railway stations is 43 km (originally – 41.5 km).

In 1894 state bought back Riga-Jelgava railway from a private company and since 1895 its exploitation was assigned to Riga-Orla railway administration. In 1915 control over Jelgava station and part of the line was taken by German army, which converted rail track into Western European or normal gauge (1435 mm). In 1919 control over the line was taken by national company Latvijas dzelzceli – one rail track was kept normal gauge, but another – 1524 mm or Russian gauge. In 1940 the line came under the control of Latvijas dzelzcelš, a formation of Transport Ministry of the USSR that converted the normal gauge track into Russian gauge. In 1941 German army converted both tracks of the line into normal gauge, but in 1944 army forces of the USSR renewed one track into 1524 mm. Another track (also of Russian gauge) was totally renewed after the electrification of the line Riga – Jelgava in 1972.
