Geocache Description:

This cache was written for Year 9 students at Uckfield Community Technology College to find as a geographical task on 5th July 2012. Many school events involve activities in the churchyard and one of our deputy headteachers was the rector here until recently. The coords will take you to a gateway into the church. There is a cheap/ free carpark (depending on when you come) just south of the church. Enter this from the High Street: turn L past the jeweller's clock as you drive up the hill.

This beautiful church in the heart of the town is also in the heart of the community. A small chapel was built here in 1291, and was added to at various times over the years though all but the tower was demolished in 1839 and the current church was built onto that.

It's well worth a visit inside as it's very lovely, lit by some beautiful medieval stained glass that was part of the original church, and additional 19th century windows. The Queen and other members of the Royal Family worshipped here in 1953 whilst staying in Uckfield. The organ is considered to be very fine and certainly sounds beautiful. It was one of only two built by Mr T Brooke in 1902, whose premises were over a shop in the High Street, and cost £450.00. Originally water pumped, it was adapted to hand in 1909 and then to electricity.

There are many interesting memorials within the church, including the two brass memorials on the west wall that are dedicated to the 96 local men who died in the First World War. The wooden memorial on the north side of the Belfry door is dedicated to the 44 local men who died in the Second World War.

In the belfry there is a peal of 8 bells and some evenings the area is filled with the beautiful sounds of the ringers practising ringing changes.

The Dovecote in the grounds was made from the wood of a cedar tree which had stood in the churchyard since 1846 and came down in the storms of 1987. The storms devastated this area and the stained glass window in the south wall was a gift dedicated to the children of Uckfield to commemorate the storms. There are many fine memorials in the churchyard - including one to Napkin Brooker who, in 1771, was found as an infant child wrapped in a table napkin at the Rocks; he died aged 91 in 1862. His memorial is near the lych-gate

There is one document of great historical interest on display inside the church, beside the Belfry entrance. It's dated 21st September 1940. This indicates the intention that, at the start of any German Army invasion in World War II, Uckfield was to be part of the area to be taken by force.

TO FIND THE CACHE, SOLVE THESE CLUES WHICH WILL TAKE YOU ON A WALK AROUND THE CHURCHYARD. HOWEVER, THE CLUES ARE ALL ACCESSIBLE FROM THE PATHS: THERE IS NO NEED TO CROSS OR DISTURB THE GRAVES.

FINAL CACHE IS AT: N50 58. A B C -and - E000 05. D E F

A = _____: How many doors are there in the side of the dovecote? Divide the number by 4.

B = ______: This unusual stone is dedicated to a man who was a missionary to some people with a rather rude-sounding name! He was BORN in 18 B 4.

To find C, you need to locate a bench mark like this one, which is carved into the brickwork somewhere in the grounds:

C = ______: Opposite the benchmark there is a gravestoone dedicated to Richard who died when he was aged XY. Calculate: X - Y = C

D = ______: A sheltered seat was built in memory of Edward Sanderson. Eileen Little was his grand daughter. She was 9 D years old when she died.

E = _____: The church building is closest to the surrounding wall at it's the most EASTERLY point. Opposite that point there is a black metal post: what number is on the post? E= that number minus 4.

F = There are the faces of the clock in the tower - but there's another huge clockface in the grounds. What number on that clockface is nearest to a door to the CHURCH? F= that number divided by 4.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list
