Somenos Bricks
There were 2 brickyards in Somenos in the early 1900s. One was Jennings and Son, the other was a Chinese brickyard. The Jennings ended up in Somenos by mistake, they had been running a brickyard in Victoria but as their supply of clay ran out, they figured they would move north to Nanaimo in hopes of finding a new clay deposit. As they were passing through Somenos, they noticed the amount of clay and with a little further investigation, they bought 20 acres to start up their company again. The surface clay was dug from the ground, mixed with water before being pressed into moulds bearing the imprint "SOMENOS" which pressed out most of the water. After air drying, sometimes for up to twelve months, 200,000 bricks would be fired all at once. It took an entire week of heat from a raging fire to cure them. Unfortunately today, there are no reminants of the Brickyard, buildings or even holes where clay would have been dug from.
