This little church, dedicated to St. Mary, is mostly Norman, dating to around 1170 with the chancel being added during the 13th Century. Edward’s I and III stayed nearby whilst Winchelsea was being rebuilt and fortified.
Although it seems probable the name is merely Anglo-Saxon for “edge of the woods” a far more interesting origin for the name comes from folk legend. The church, it is said, was first planned to be built on marshy ground near the river. Each night, however, the stones placed on the site had been moved to higher ground to where the church currently is today. One night the locals decided to stay up to see what was happening and they saw “a host of angels calling out ‘o’er the mere! o’er the mere!’” – this became Uddimere and finally Udimore.
