Geocache Description:

This cache takes you a few kilometers out of La Cumbre to the Monkey Refuge "Proyecto Carayá".

Howler Monkeys are native to the tropical regions of South America. But here at the Proyecto Carayá in the Córdoba province, more than 150 of them have found refuge after being held as pets in private households or have been rescued from overcrowded zoos.

The monkeys now live either directly on the Carayá compound or in the nearby forrests, where the projects staff looks after them with the help of local and foreign volunteers. Besides the monkey, there is also a large group of stray dogs living here and other animals such as llamas, horses, goats and even two pumas.

From La Cumbre you can get here by taxi in about 20-30 minutes. In May 2012, the cab fare was 84 Pesos and the entry fee to the refuge costs 30 Pesos for an adult. It's open daily from 10am to 5pm.

The cache container is located outside the refuge near the entry. It's a small plastic container in a plastic bag. It contains a log and a cache note in Spanish, but no pen (so be sure to bring your own). It's big enough to hold small items and trackables too.
