Geocache Description:

Don’t Go Up the Stairs!

Evolutionarily speaking (if you believe in that sort of thing) our species’ history is as prey, not predator. It’s only with the advent of reason that we have been able to shape our environment with technology to claim dominance over most other terrestrial life-forms and much of nature.

To wit:
  • Sticks to Insert into Anthills,
  • Clubs,
  • Pointy Things,
  • The Wheel, (a personal fave)
  • Spears, (‘Throwable’, not ‘Brittney’, although…)
  • Vehicles,
  • Wit,
  • Diplomacy,
  • Duct Tape and
  • Nuclear Weapons.
But, genetic predispositions will always find a way to express themselves, and because of our relatively modest natural position on the food chain, as a species we will always be a snack waiting to happen.

As prey we’re wired to seek higher ground. Better views of the surrounding savannah, less-restricted vistas scanning for circling raptors, and the ability to sleep in the crook of a tree without having to worry about being stepped on.

In modern life, we still express this tendency in many ways; metaphysically, ideologically and literally.

A few:
  • Morally, we strive to take ‘The High Road’,
  • Religiously, we answer to ‘A Higher Power’,
  • Economically, we yearn to be ‘Upwardly-Mobile’,
  • In Middle School, the most intelligent of us seek shelter at the top of the bleachers during selection for Dodgeball.
In counterpoint:
  • Morally, a personal betrayal is a ‘Low Blow’,
  • Religiously, we try to avoid a ‘Fall From Grace',
  • Economically, the derided ‘Bargain-Basement’ is, of course, in the Basement, and
  • We (meaning our wives) disdain ‘Low-Brow Humor’.
The key to a successful hunt for this cache is to struggle to overcome ‘Human Nature’; to fight 20,000 years of DNA (or 4,000, if you DON'T believe in that sort of thing), to combat the urge to ‘live in the trees’, to take a firm stand on the ground in search of your goal.

Stay low. In this case your very survival might depend on it.

Don’t climb, for only danger awaits those who dare to ascend.

In short,
Don’t Go Up the Stairs!
