La rivière qui traverse Plancoët va jusqu'à la mer (une quinzaine de km). Elle s'appelle l'Argenon, son nom « ar » « gwen » « on » (rivière blanche) vient du fait qu’à marée montante son lit s’emplit d’une écume naturelle due aux brassages des eaux douces et salées à son embouchure au Guildo. C'est une ria ou aber, vallée fluviale envahie par la mer lors de la montée des eaux et soumise au rythme des marées jusqu’à Plancoët.
Sur cette rivière des bateaux à fond plat (bagares) pouvaient naviguer jusqu' à la mer au port du Guildo. Labas les marchandises pouvaient être chargées sur des gros bateaux à destination d'autres ports français ou anglais.
A une centaine de métres plus en amont, se situait le port de Plancoët, où on voit toujours la cale. Les bateaux navigaient à la voile, à la rame ou tirés par des chevaux sur les chemins de halage
Les marchandises transportées sont variées Pommes, patates, peaux, mais aussi de la marne (matériel de construction). Le trafic du port joue un rôle essentiel dans le développement commercial et industriel de la ville.
Suivre le chemin de halage, constitue une très belle pormenade bucolique.
