Am 27. Mai 2017 ereignete sich ein massiver Felssturz von der Großarler Landesstraße in die Liechtensteinklamm. Dabei wurden Stege zerstört und 17 Menschen im hinteren Teil der Klamm eingeschlossen. Diese wurden von der Bergrettung über Notsteige geborgen. Es blieben alle unverletzt.
Nach einem einstimmigen Gemeindevertretungsbeschluss investierte die Gemeinde über 3,5 Millionen Euro in die Sanierung.
Auf Grund der Situation rund um das Corona-Virus konnten die Arbeiten im Frühjahr 2020 erst verspätet aufgenommen werden und so musste der ursprünglich geplante Eröffnungstermin neuerlich verschoben werden.
Am 11. Juni 2020 wurde die Liechtensteinklamm wieder für Besucher eröffnet.

Origin of the Liechtenstein Gorge
During the last ice age, glaciers as high as 3000 meters towered over the valleys and mountains. When the climate changed, the primeval force of these glaciers carved out the main valleys in its continuous downward expansion. This resulted in meter high land ridges adjacent to the tributary valleys. The Großarl torrent dealt with this drop in elevation by fighting against the hard rock, cutting, crushing, eroding and carrying it along. The water was stronger than the rock.
Development
After some futile attempts, a number of Pongau-based members of the Alpine Association succeeded in 1875 in developing the highly-romantic gorge. However, during the development work the brave men fell short of money. In their plight they turned to Prince Johann II von und zu Liechtenstein. With his donation of 600 guilders work was completed in 1876. And a name was found: Die Liechtensteinklamm.
For your safety
The major part of the entrance fees are used by the Sankt Johann municipality to invest in the visitors’ safety. Iron and steel, thick beams and wooden pillars support the visitors safely to the world-famous gorge. Mountaineering experts free the walls from loose rock. Geologists and static experts control and check safety work annually.
Normally Liechtensteinklamm open from may until october.
