FORT ROYER, MAGNIFICENT OYSTER SITE IN THE RESERVE OF MOEZE NEAR BOYARDVILLE.
Chemin sableux entre claires et cordon dunaire
Très beau site apprécié des bernaches, hérons, aigrettes garzette et autres oiseaux ; pins et chênes verts.
Des cordons de sable emprisonnant une grande vasière colonisée par des tapis de Salicorne, d’Obione, de Soudes…et surveillée par des milliers de bécasseaux, huîtriers-pies, courlis, aigrettes garzettes… Voici ce qu’en 1920, les premiers ostréiculteurs voyaient sur ce petit territoire, d’à peine dix hectares, abandonné par la mer.
Alors, sabots de bois dans les pieds, bandes de cuir graissées au suif, enroulées autour du bas des jambes, mains nues, à grands coups de pelle, pioche, fourche et autre rabale, avec beaucoup de sueur et de courage, ils se sont retroussés les manches et ont creusé chenaux, claires, ruissons…façonnant au fil du temps le paysage, pour y faire naître l’Ostréiculture …
Peu de temps après, une quarantaine de cabanes en bois, enduites de goudron, trônait fièrement au milieu d’un superbe champ de claires…Un village ostréicole était né ! Il fallait lui donner un nom… Ce fut : Fort-Royer !
Situé en bord de mer, au sud de Boyardville, face à l’Ile d’Aix et au littoral charentais, le site ostréicole de Fort-Royer est implanté dans une réserve naturelle remarquable pour son intérêt écologique avec ses centaines d’oiseaux et sa flore spécifique de la dune et des vases salées. Il se compose d’un secteur ostréicole façonné par l’homme (village coloré d’authentiques cabanes en bois et d’établissements aux normes plus récents implantés au cœur d’un champ de claires toujours utilisé et entretenu comme autrefois), d’un estran vaseux partiellement couvert de parcs à huîtres et de formations dunaires en constante évolution.

Cords of sand imprisoning a big tidal reservoir colonized by carpets(mats) of Salicornia, Obione, Soda and watched by thousands of young woodcocks, oystercatchers-magpies, curlews, little egrets … This is what in 1920, the first oyster farmers saw on this small territory, of hardly ten hectares, abandoned(given up) by the sea.
Then, wooden clogs(hoofs) in feet, leather bands(strips) greased in the tallow, rolled up around the bottom(stocking) of legs, naked hands, in big knocks of shovel, pickaxe, fork and other rabale, with many sweat and courage, they were rolled up the sleeves and dug(accentuated) channels, clear, ruissons shaping over time the landscape, to create the Oyster farming there …
A short time later, about forty wooden huts, coated with tar, throned proudly in the middle of a magnificent field of clear … An oyster village had been born! It was necessary to give to him(her) a name … It was: Fort-Royer!
Situated by the sea, in the South of Boyardville, in front of the Ile d'Aix and in the coast Charentais, the oyster site of Fort-Royer is implanted in a remarkable nature reserve for its ecological interest with its hundred birds and its specific flora of the dune and the salty(steep) muds. He(it) consists of an oyster sector shaped by the man (village colored with authentic wooden huts and with establishments in the standards more recent implanted in the heart of a field of clear always used and maintained as formerly), of a muddy foreshore partially covered with oyster beds and with constantly evolving dune trainings(formations)
