  La rivière peut se déplacer dans le lit majeur, sur une largeur conséquente (jusqu’à 1500m entre Varennes et Moulins). La faune trouve une grande variété d’habitats sur les rives. La biodiversité du val d’Allier est ainsi la plus forte d’Auvergne.
Autrefois, uniquement dues aux divagations naturelles de la rivière dans son lit majeur, les transformations d’aujourd’hui sont principalement imposées par les contraintes de l’homme (construction de l’aéroport, zone d’activités de « Vichy-Rhue », sablières…).
Désormais, les politiques publiques optent pour la préservation du fonctionnement naturel de cet écosystème fluvial.
 
 
  The river can move in the flood plain, on a consistent width (up to 1500m between Varennes and Moulins). The fauna found a wide variety of habitats on the banks. Biodiversity of the Allier valley is the strongest of the Auvergne.
Previously, only due to natural divagations of the river in its flood plain, the changes of today are mainly imposed by the constraints of man (construction of the airport, business area of "Vichy-Rhue", sandpits ...).
Now, public policy choose the preservation of the natural functioning of this river ecosystem.
