St Saviours Church Shotton Colliery is a micro cache within the church grounds.
The church first existed as the Chapel of Ease of St. Saviour and was built between 1852 and 1854 to a design by an architect who also did work at Durham Cathedral. Due to the sinking of a Colliery Shotton Colliery grew at a rapid rate and became a large settlement, St. Saviour's was made into a separate parish in 1862. Later this new church became ruined and was restored in 1903.
The church hit the news in May 2008 when a parachutist jumping from 10,000ft missed his landing site at the nearby Peterlee Parachute Centre and landed in a tree in the church grounds with only a couple of cuts and bruises!
This cache is part of a church micro series, If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list.
Cache placed with the kind permission of the vicar.
This is a micro cache, please bring your own pen or pencil to sign the log.
