Geocache Description:

One of the parts of Gauja-Daugava canal

Back in late 19th and early 20th centuries Gauja-Baltezers canal was a small part of the whole hydrological system which was used to raft trees from Gauja to Riga.

The whole system itself was projected starting from 1662, but it was built only some 250 years later, from 1901 till 1903. The reason for the project was to improve the waterways for tree rafting.

The first one was built Gauja-Baltezers canal itself. It was 3km long and started near the ex-Remberģu manor and ended near the ex-Alderu manor close to the lake Mazais Baltezers. As water level in Gauja near the starting point of canal, was 2 to 6m higher, the stream was regulated by a lock. Near Gauja there were another gate-ish lock, but at the entrance in Mazais Baltezers a lock of "Stoneja" system. During 20th century sixties the tree rafting was stopped, so now only the canal is left and some ruins of both the locks.

The cache is hidden in a place from which you can see the Mazais Baltezers (the ending of the canal) and to the other side you can see some leftovers of the canal. These two bridges stand bravely as the two last Mohicans. There are two other caches on the Gauja-Baltezers canal where in both places you can see the lock places.

The cache itself is a regular sized container with some goodies and is placed in a fairly dry place. Good luck!
