Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in memory of the Proms that were held in Tilgate Park as part of the Crawley Festival. The Prom was first held in 1993 and the last one was in 2005. It was a magical evening of music and fireworks held on the grassed area with the magnificent backdrop of the lake. A promenade concert, is by definition "one during which the audience or part of moves about". Promenade concerts began at the Queen's hall in 1895. The building was destroyed by bombing in 1941, however the proms continued uninterupted by moving to the Royal Albert Hall where they continue today. Sir Henry Wood conducted the promenade concerts until his death in 1944. He was responsible for bringing many of the popular and often not so well known classics to the public. Crawley didn't have an Albert Hall, but Tilgate Park was the perfect setting for an open air Proms concert. Many local musicians and singers took part, and the Proms popular classics, e.g. Jerusalem, Rule Brittania and Land of Hope and Glory were included in the programme. The proms concerts were rounded off in true Proms style with the 1812 overture and spectacular fireworks.
