Geocache Description:

A 35mm film canister placed within the church grounds

St LIeian’s Church Gorslas.

The diaries of the builder Thomas Jenkins toll us that the first building on the site of the present church was a Church School in 1864. The first mention of a Church was in October 1872 and St Lleian’s was consecrated by the Bishop of St David’s in April 1879.

Since then the Church has been the centre of a thriving community, being the only place of worship in the village.

The Rev. Michael Rees is the 10th incumbent and the Rev Dr Brian Jones is our 14th Curate.

The church are proud of their efforts in preserving what is an old and beautiful building. Few Churches have every window decorated with stained glass like St Leian’s, being all indication of the reverence this building has generated over the years.

Probably the most traumatic experience suffered by the Church was the discovery in May 1983 that the roof trusses had split. This was taken in hand and, at a cost of £48,000, a new roof was installed and completely paid for with some grant aid by December 1986. During this period services were held in the Church Hall and it was an admirable example of a community striving together in common cause.

Likewise the dignity, which the graveyard deserves, is upheld by regular maintenance.

In its 127-year history the Church has promoted and celebrated many projects and functions on behalf of the Parish but none more worthy than the instillation of the War Memorial Plaque in 2005. Presented by the Gorslas Community Council this is a fitting tribute for the ultimate sacrifice of local servicemen during two World Wars.

“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
