History of Hebron Baptist Chapel

Sometime in the year 1853 a few baptist, some of whom lived at Stepaside and others at Saundersfoot, began to hold religious services in a cottage near the spot where Saundersfoot Railway Station now stands, and in view of the numbers that attended, were very desirous of forming a church near there.

About this time Mr William Rees a solicitor, from Haverfordwest, a man noted for his zeal for the propagation of Baptist principles, brought a small piece of land on the side of the short hill leading down to the village of Saundersfoot. Soon after he paid a visit to the baptist college in Haverfordwest, and told the students that if anyone of them undertook the responsibility of starting a church, he would hand over the plot of land he had brought.

Immedialtely one of the students, Benjamin Lewis accepted the offer, allowing no grass to grow under his feet Mr Lewis with the help of a few supporters commenced to build a small church. Upon completion of the building the Church was consitutionally formed and received into the Pembrokeshire Association in 1854.

The Chapel was enlarged and renovated during the ministry of Rev William Harries at a cost of £350. It was registered for the solemnization of marriage on 2nd November 1905. In 1926 during the ministry of Rev Thomas Davies, the Chapel and Vestry were again renovated and electricity and heating was installed at a cost of £90. Hebron Baptist Chapel and Zoar Baptist Chapel (Llanteg) used to share ministers and celebrated the centenary together in 1954.

St. Issell's is an ancient parish, older than the village. The name dates back to the early Christian period when Welsh saints were evangelising in the area. The church, which bore the name of Usyllt, presumably on or near the site of the present church, was important in the early period of Welsh Christianity. It was the focus of a number of routes, a road from the present sea front, to St. Issell's, was known as the Church Way

The first Congregational Chapel was built in 1838 with William Thomas of Sardis as Minister. It was re-built at the end of the 19th century and its original name of Bethel was changed to Thomas Memorial, in honour of Dr. David Thomas of Stockwell, a distinguished divine and son of the first minister.

The Wesleyan Chapel was opened in 1892. Previously the local Society had met in a loft above a stable. The land was leased from Picton Castle Estate for a 99 year term at an annual rent of 5d (later converted to 3p). Bethany, a daughter church of Bethesda Calvinistic Methodist Chapel was erected in 1865 and renovated about 1910. A few years ago the building was converted into flats.

Catholic Church of St. Bride
This was built in 1966. Previously, local Catholics worshipped in Tenby.
