Geocache Description:

Small cache located near the Cresaptown United Methodist Church. Park in parking lot for easiest and safest find and not on the street. BYOP - No room for SWAG. Considered a micro, but just a tad bigger than your typical micro.

The name of the cache is 228 because in June, 2012 this church will be marking it's 228th anniversity at this location.

Francis Asbury, the first Methodist Bishop in America preached at Cresaptown and dedicated the first church here in 1784. And what is pretty significant about that is it would make this church building only twenty years later than the first Methodist church building in America.

The first class leader at Cresaptown was Joseph Cresap, appointed by Bishop Asbury before any chapel was even built.

The first church was built of logs, and the benches and pulpit were made of split logs with round, wooden legs driven into auger holes like the pioneers made their tables and benches. The log church had a stone fireplace and chimney. During the winter, the attendants, knowing how cold it was for the sheep that browsed in the nearby fields, left the door open so the sheep would have shelter. Then on Sunday morning the sheep would have to be driven out of the church when the attendants arrived.

Of course the church building has been rebuilt and added onto several times over the years but has always been here on this same ground.

Congratulations to Matt Proffitt for the "FTF".
