Dinosaur Train Geocache: Chasmosaurus Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: From the Northern Region Office, New Jersey State Parks Department:

Over a year ago New Jersey enacted a policy that all geocachers must obtain a permit to have their cache on State Park property. We have informed all geocaching host that this is their responsibility and have given them ample time to go about getting their permits. At this time, over a year later, there are still several caches that haven’t complied.

We ask that as the land managers for the attached properties we would like to have these illegal caches removed.

Based on the list provided by the state, I am forced to archive this listing. If you have a permit, get a permit or don't believe your cache is on state park/forest land, please contact me via email. Make sure you include the GC code.

If you don't plan to get a permit, please remove your geocache so it doesn't become geo-trash.

Dinosaur Train Geocache: Chasmosaurus

Chasmosaurus was a rhinoceros-like dinosaur that was 16-26 feet (5-8 m) long and weighed about 3.5 tons (3220 kg). It had three short horns on its face along with a large bony plate projecting from the back of its skull (a frill). One short, wide horn was on its snout above its parrot-like beak and two backwards-facing brow horns were above its eyes. It had a large skull, four sturdy legs with hoof-like claws, a bulky body and a short, pointed tail.

Chasmosaurus lived in the late Cretaceous period, about 76 to 70 million years ago, toward the end of the Mesozoic, the Age of Reptiles. It was among the last of the dinosaur species to evolve before the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction 65 million years ago.

Chasmosaurus was probably a herding animal, like the other ceratopsians (horned, plant-eating dinosaurs). This hypothesis is supported by the finding of bone beds, large deposits of bones of the same species in an area. Chasmosaurus hatched from eggs which may have been cared for by adults. When threatened by predators, Chasmosaurus probably charged into its enemy like the modern-day rhinoceros does. This was probably a very effective defense.

"Go outside, get into nature and make your own discoveries!"

That is what Dr. Scott challenges his viewers to do at the end of each Dinosaur Train episode.
