Cache of Ribeira do Algibre
This cache can be quite easily found, since you follow the general information and do your homework. The site is flat, has a woody vegetation /shrub varied and can be visited all year round.
Algibre, uma Ribeira a preservar.
Para chegarmos à pacata Aldeia de Paderne atravessamos a localidade do Purgatório e nos deparamos com uma pequena ponte com três arcos construída em 1905, com corrimões em ferro forjado sobre um curso de água, o qual a partir daqui recebe o nome de ribeira de Paderne. Esta ponte sofreu à pouco tempo, uma pequena remodelação, sendo construída ao lado, uma passagem exclusiva para os peões.
A jusante, encontramos uma nascente que alimentará ainda mais este curso de água, trata-se da conhecida Fonte de Paderne, importante aquífero que aflora a superfície, e faz parte de um sistema mais amplo denominado “ Sistema Aquífero Querença – Silves “. Se continuarmos a descer a ribeira, logo a seguir à Fonte, encontramos o Sítio da Amoreira, local onde funcionava uma antiga azenha para moagem de cereais. Acompanhando a descida da ribeira chegamos ao Moinho da Cabana, mais conhecido como Azenha do Castelo. A partir desse ponto a ribeira recebe o nome de Ribeira da Quarteira, entrando no Concelho de Loulé, atravessa a Várzea da Quarteira e finalmente atinge a foz, na praia da Rocha Baixinha.
A montante da Freguesia, esta ribeira desliza entre cerros e vales e entra em Paderne, vindo da Serra do Caldeirão, mais precisamente de Alte, recebe o nome local de Algibre, do árabe: poço, nascente. Este é o principal manancial que alimentará a Ribeira de Paderne, possui as margens em melhor estado de conservação, excetuando os locais já próximos à Aldeia, onde praticamente pouca vegetação ribeirinha pode ser vista. Junto à linha de água, esta vegetação recebe o nome de mata-galeria ou galeria ripícola.
Deve-se referir também que esta ribeira percorre uma extensão considerável dentro da freguesia, sendo as suas margens pouco utilizadas para a prática da agricultura. Na atualidade apenas algumas famílias ainda se dedicam ao plantio nas suas margens. O que se vê são árvores de sequeiro, como alfarrobeiras, oliveiras e amendoeiras a salpicar as encostas dos cerros. As várzeas são mais utilizadas para o plantio de laranjeiras e videiras.
O local da cache
Este afluente da Ribeira da Quarteira é o principal fornecedor de água e uma das zonas por onde passa, de maior beleza, conseguindo em alguns locais manter a vegetação ribeirinha ainda em bom estado de conservação.
Onde estacionar o seu cachemobile
Podes optar:
- deixar o cachemobile a aproximadamente 2400 metros do GZ, no lugar chamado Moinho Novo, e ir a pé ou de bicicleta. (GPS Lat 37º11.011’ N e Long 008º10 107’ W)
- se possuir um carro com suspensão alta pode seguir por uma estrada de terra com trechos com algumas rochas salientes por mais 1500 metros e deixar o carro no Moinho da Fonte, ( GPS Lat- 37º11.158’ N e Long- 008º09.428’ W ).
Os últimos 900 metros aproximadamente, são feitos obrigatoriamente a pé ou de bicicleta, pois a estrada termina nesse local do Moinho da Fonte e inicia o trilho pela Mata Ribeirinha.

Algibre: a river to be preserved.
To reach the quiet village of Paderne, you have to cross Purgatory place and come across a small bridge with three arches built in 1905, with wrought iron railings on a waterway, which from here is called the river of Paderne. This bridge was demodulated a while ago, being built beside an exclusive passage for pedestrians.
Downstream, you will find a spring that feeds this course even more water, it is the known “Fonte de Paderne”, important aquifer that rises to the surface, and is part of a larger system called "Aquifer System Querença - Silves". Continuing down the river, just after the source, you will find the site of Amoreira, where used to work a former mill for grinding grain. Following the descent of the river you will arrive at the Moinho da Cabana, better known as the” Azenha do Castelo”. From this point the river is called “Ribeira da Quarteira”, entering the Municipality of Loulé, crosses the Lowland of Quarteira and finally reaches the mouth, on Rocha Baixinha Beach.
Up to the Town, it slides between hills and river valleys and enters Paderne, coming from the Serra do Caldeirão, more precisely in Alte, gets the local name of Algibre, in Arabic means: well, spring. This is the main spring that feeds the Ribeira de Paderne, has margins in a better state of preservation, except the sites already close to the village, where virtually little riparian vegetation can be seen. Along the water line, this vegetation is called “mata galeria” or “galeria ripícola”.
We have to emphasize also that this river runs through a considerable extent within the freguesia, their margins are little used for agriculture. Currently only a few families still work in planting in the margins. What you will see are trees without irrigation, such as carob, olive and almond trees on the hills. The wetlands are mostly used for the planting of orange trees and vines.
The location of the cache:
This tributary of Ribeira da Quarteira is the leading supplier of water and one of the areas through which it passes, the most beautiful, getting in some places that still maintain the riparian vegetation in good condition.
Where to park your cachemobile
You can choose:
- Leave the cachemobile about 2400 m GZ at a place called Moinho Novo, and go on foot or by bike. (GPS Lat 37 º 11.011 'N and Long 008 ° 10 107' W)
- If you have a car with high suspension you can follow a dirt road for over 1500 meters and leave the car in Moinho da Fonte (GPS Lat 37 º 11.158 'N and Long-008 º 09,428' W).
