Der Name ist Programm für die Fähre Amt Neuhaus (früher God med ons IV, ehemals Rheinhilde), wie auch für die Gemeinde Amt Neuhaus.
Die Gemeinde war Teil des Herzogtums Sachsen-Lauenburg, wurde dann Teil des Königreichs Hannover, welches später Teil der preussischen Provinz Hannover wurde. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg gehörte die Gemeinde zur DDR. Seit der Wende gehört die Gemeinde durch Mehrheitsentscheid der Gemeinderäte wieder zu Niedersachsen.
