Geocache Description:

Pawnee Rock
Pawnee Rock, KS

Drive to the top of the hill and climb
the spiral staircase to the top of the observation platform

Short hike & climb stairs to platform-if you wish.

Southwest of the towns of Great Bend and Dundee is the town of Pawnee Rock. It was named after the Dakota Sandstone Rock hill just north of town. Pawnee Rock Park sits on top of the hill and it is open free to the public from 0800 til sunset.

Pawnee Rock was an unusual landmark along the Santa Fe Trail. It’s height made it a good location for observation and was used by Indians and travelers along the trail.

Take time to enjoy the view of the plains from the top of the observation platform and read the information both on top of the platform and on the hill.
