Part of the 2011-2012 Come Out and Play Contest. The Notable Women of New Brunswick series honours women either born or based in the City who are distinguished in some capacity for their contributions and historical significance. This is by no means an exclusive or complete list, but a sampling from various disciplines.
Enjoy!
Allison Brewer - Writer, Activist, Politician
Allison Brewer was the founder and long time director of the Morgantaler abortion clinic in Fredericton, New Brunswick before moving to Nunavut in 2000. In Nunavut, she continued her activism organizing the first public gay pride event and lobbying for the passage of the Nunavut Human Rights Act. In 2010 she was grand marshal for the first officially recognized Gay Pride parade for the City of Fredericton.
In 2004, she received Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case, for her work in human rights. This award honours those who promote equality for girls and women in Canada.
From 2005-2006, she served as leader of the New Democratic Party for New Brunswick.
The location of this cache is where the first City-sponsored Gay Pride Parade began its route on August 2010. Because of construction of the Princess Margaret bridge, the parade route went along the footpath beside the river to Officer's Square.
Congratulations VBPad for being the FTF!
