Geocache Description:

Historic Hamilton: Grassie Blacksmith Shop

Historic Hamilton will be a series of caches that serve to bring cachers to historic places in and around the City of Hamilton. These caches can be placed by anyone, and are not limited to one owner. If you know of a historic place in the City of Hamilton to which you would like to bring people, feel free to add it to the series!

Cache is a bison tube that contains only the logbook. Please bring your own writing instrument to sign, and replace as found.

This building originally housed the Grassie Blacksmith Shop. It was the last running blacksmith shop in Mount Albion. It marked the eastern edge of the hamlet, standing about 100m east of the Mud Street and Glendale (later Mount Albion) Road intersection.

When William Grassie emigrated from Scotland in 1847 he built the shop on the north side of Mud Street, east of Mount Albion Road. Much of the building was destroyed by fire in 1984. When the Parkway was nearing completion, there was talk of restoring the building as a blacksmith shop for educational purposes but there was no money for the project.

The crumbling remains of the stone structure were fenced off by the City of Hamilton to help prevent vandalism.

Congratulations to RainBeauxs and akela31 on the Joint FTF!
