The
Founders Trail is a short section of the Catamount Trail dedicated to
the three founders of the trail. In 1984, UVM geography student
Steve Bushey was working on a graduate thesis in geography. His
project was to survey and then ski a feasible route the length of
Vermont. He enlisted two of his school buddies, Ben Rose and Paul
Jarris in the adventure. Soon afterwards the Catamount Trail
Association was incorporated, and the trail building officially
began. The trail was officially completed in 2007, and measures
about 300 miles.
To reach this cache, park at the Wiessner Woods trailhead at N
44°29.816 W 072°43.626. Follow the light blue Catamount Trail
blazes, passing the sugar shack. Dog owners may open up the mailbox
in front of the shack and find dog biscuits which have
traditionally been provided by neighboring landowners. Just before
you reach a private house, the blazes direct you left onto the
Founders Trail. The cache is near this junction. Continuing along
the trail will eventually bring you up to the Edson Hill XC
center.
