Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (Colmar, 1834 - Paris, 1904) est un sculpteur dont l'oeuvre la plus connue est la Statue de la Liberté, ou plus exactement La Liberté éclairant le monde, conçue et construite à Paris, et offerte par la France aux États-Unis le 4 juillet 1876, à l'occasion du centenaire de leur indépendance. Par suite de difficultés de financement, la construction de la statue prit cependant du retard, et la cérémonie officielle du don n'eut lieu que le 4 juillet 1884. Cette statue fût ensuite démontée, traversa l'Atlantique, et fût finalement installée à New-York, où l'inauguration eût lieu le 28 octobre 1886.
De nombreuses répliques à moindre échelle de cette oeuvre sont visibles de par le monde.
A Paris seul, on peut voir trois monuments significatifs :
- Dans l'Ile aux Cygnes, une réplique offerte à la France par les citoyens français établis aux USA, en 1889. Il s'agit d'une version coulée en bronze d'un modèle d'étude en plâtre réalisé par Bartholdi.
- Au jardin du Luxembourg, un modèle en bronze qui servit à Bartholdi pour réaliser la statue réèlle qui sera installée à New-York. Ce modèle fût offert par Bartholdi en 1900 et installé au jardin du Luxembourg en 1906. (L'atelier de Bartholdi se trouvait 82 rue d'Assas, face au jardin du Luxembourg)
- Au souterrain du pont de l'Alma, réplique en taille réelle de la Flamme, don des USA à la France en 1989. Cette flamme est souvent utilisée depuis 1997 comme mémorial à la mémoire de Lady Diana, tuée dans ce souterrain du pont de l'Alma.
L'oeuvre de Bartholdi comprend en outre de nombreux autres monuments et statues, dont le célèbre "Lion de Belfort", érigé en pierres à flanc de falaise, et sa réplique réduite en bronze de la place Denfert-Rochereau à Paris.

Cette cache necessite une coopération entre un géocacheur de France et un géocacheur des Etats Unis d'Amérique, dans la continuité de ce signe d'amitié entre les deux nations qu'est la Statue de la Liberté.
La principale difficulté de cette cache sera donc pour vous d'entrer en contact avec un géocacheur américain volontaire pour réaliser cette cache en binôme avec vous
Il s'agit en fait de deux caches "Unknown" liées : "Hommage à Bartholdi" (GC38JJ6) à Paris, et "International Cooperation" (GC391DA) à Colorado-Springs, USA. Un géocacheur en France recherche les indices parisiens, tandis qu'un géocacheur aux Etats-Unis recherche les indices situés dans le Colorado.
L'ensemble des indices est nécessaire pour déterminer les coordonnées des deux caches finales. Quand ces coordonnées sont découvertes, chaque géocacheur va chercher la cache dans le pays où il se trouve, et signe le log-book avec son propre pseudo.
Indices à découvrir à Paris: A, C et E (pour la cache de Paris) et H, J et L (pour la cache de Colorado-Springs):
A WP1 vous découvrirez, outre la réplique en bronze du Lion de Belfort, une fontaine Wallace tout près de laquelle vous trouverez, au pied d'un arbre, un nombre de 6 chiffres au format 2xxxx1, moulé dans le ciment.
Relevez E = somme des 5 premiers chiffres, et J = 2e chiffre.
A WP2 vous pourrez voir une tombe décorée avec une oeuvre de Bartholdi : La Petite Alsacienne ornant de fleurs la palette du peintre Jundt. Sur le flanc gauche du buste supérieur, vous verrez une inscription en trois mots gravée dans le bronze :
Calculez A = nombre de lettres du premier mot - 1 et H = nombre de lettres du deuxième mot + 1
A WP3 se trouve la tombe de Bartholdi, décorée avec une oeuvre qu'il avait conçue lui même. Sur le flanc droit de la tombe, visualisez la plaque métallique posée lors de la restauration du monument :
Relevez C = nombre de bateaux visibles sur cette plaque et L = nombre maximum de vis qui peuvent être utilisées pour fixer cette plaque

Frédéric Augustus Bartholdi (Colmar, 1834 - Paris, 1904) is a sculptor whose best-known work is the Statue of the Liberty, or more precisely Liberty Enlightening the World, conceived and constructed in Paris, and offered by France to the United States July 4, 1876, on the occasion of the centenary of U.S. independence.
Numerous replicas at reduced scale of this work are visible around the world.
In Paris alone, one can see three meaningful monuments:
- In the island to the Swans, a replica offered to France in 1889 by French citizens established in the USA. It is a version cast in bronze from a plaster model of Liberty made by Bartholdi.
- In the garden of Luxemburg, a bronze model made by Bartholdi before starting on the full-size version destined for New York. This model was offered by Bartholdi in 1900 and was installed at the garden of Luxemburg in 1906. (The workshop of Bartholdi was at 82 Rue d'Assas, facing the garden of Luxemburg)
- At the bridge of Alma, a full-size replica of Liberty's flame, given to France by the USA in 1989. Since Lady Diana's 1997 death underground in Alma, this flame is often lit in her memory.
The work of Bartholdi includes numerous other monuments and statues, such as the famous "Lion of Belfort", sculpted in stone, whose reduced replica may be seen at Denfert- Rochereau in Paris.
Some statues act as ornaments to funerary stones:
This cache requires cooperation between a geocacher in France and a geocacher in the U.S.A., in keeping with the friendship symbol between the two nations - the Statue of Liberty.
The main difficulty of this cache will therefore be for you to contact an American geocacher willing to cooperate with you.
There are two Unknown caches bound together : " Homage at Bartholdi " (GC38JJ6) in Paris, and "International Cooperation" (GC391DA) in Colorado Springs, USA. A geocacher in France searches for the Parisian clues, while a geocacher in the United States finds the clues situated in Colorado.
The full set of clues is needed to determine the coordinates of the two final caches. When these coordinates are found, both geocachers will look for the cache in their own country, and sign the log-book with his/her own pseudo.
Clues to discover in Paris: A, C and E (for the cache in Paris) and H, J and L (for the cache in Colorado Springs):
At WP1 you will discover, besides the replica made of bronze of the Lion of Belfort, a Wallace fountain near which, at the foot of a tree, you can read a 6 figures number (format 2xxxx1) molded in the concrete of the sidewalk.
Write down E = sum of the 5 first figures, and J = 2nd figure.
At WP2 you will see a tomb decorated with a work of Bartholdi: The Small Alsatian decorating flowers the palette of painter Jundt. On the left side of the upper bust, you will see three words engraved in the bronze:
Calculate A = number of letters of the first word - 1 and H = number of letters of the second word + 1
At WP3 the tomb of Bartholdi is decorated with a work that had been designed by Bartholdi himself. On the right flank of the tomb, find the metallic plate added at the time of restoration of the monument:
Write down C = number of visible boats on this plate and L = maximum number of screws that can be used to fix this plate.
