How paper was made
White paper was made using linen or cotton rags, while coarser fabrics were used for the rougher brown paper. The rags were fermented by soaking and then beaten to a pulp by hammers. The resulting "stuff" was then put into vats of warm water and stirred to keep the fibres in suspension.
A rectangular frame with a fine wire mesh was then dipped in and skillfully manipulated to ensure a consistent thickness of pulp. After draining off the water, the paper was then tipped out and put onto a piece of felt. This was repeated a number of times with further layers of paper separated by felt.
The completed stack was then squeezed in a press to remove the remaining water. After drying the paper was then cut to size.
