Geocache Description:

i was in marshallville the other night doing some maintenance. after that was complete i had other errands to run. on those travels i went down a road i hadn't been on in some time, and it got me thinking about expansion of my marshallville series again.

i forgot this cemetery was here. as a child going to the grocery store i remember a barn standing back the lane, but i don't recall a house. i know there was one once, that's where the family cemetery came from. a lot of cemeteries started out this way, out of necessity. pioneer settlers needed a place to bury there loved ones. that would often be a small plot on the wooded edge bordering a field. as an area became more populated it was not uncommon for several families to arrange to bury there dead together in an area like this. from these small beginning many cemeteries grew, and many where forgotten after family moved away or died out. while there is only one marker here there are at least six people buried here. who immigrated from France, in 1822 which is all the information i could find on this place, and it came from findagrave. it's an unusual little place, by today's standards. but it is good that it is there. it allows me to hide near what is likely the most interesting attraction in marshallville. the Johnson Woods State Nature Preserve. unfortunately the state did not allow geocaching there when I placed this cache, so i hid this near it to tell you about it. now they do allow caches, and thankfully there are caches there to enjoy the woods. Johnson wood's is one of ohio largest and best remaining old-growth forest. many trees rise 40-50 feet before the first limbs occur and several are more than 400 years old. some are 120 feet tall with a diameter of 4 to 5 feet. this is a largely undisturbed natural area with only a few improvements. there is a parking lot, an information kiosk, and a 1.5 mile boardwalk trail system. if you would like to read more about it i have included 2 link's, where my information came from. http://hikingohioparks.com/johnson-woods-hiking-ohio-parks.html and here http://www.neonaturalist.com/trails/johnson_woods_trail.html i will provide coordinates for the parking area at Johnson wood's. some important things about Johnson Woods if you chose to stop and look around. the trail is across the road from the parking lot, hours are sunrise to sunset, pets are NOT allowed, and you must remain on the boardwalk trail which would be considered a 1 terrain by geocaching standards. cache does not disturb any graves. as with all cemetery caches daylight hours only. there is a field drive to park in, and there is no need to go beyond the fence into the field. please bring your own writing implement. ****UPDATE**** below is a "found it" log from gps601. they where kind enough to find this and share a little family history. i'm including it with my description so it will be easier to read in the future. from gps601 12-26-2011 "I found this one while "home" for Christmas from South Carolina, along with my son and brother in law. There was a cache here a few years ago that was archived. I was glad to see another one placed here. Here is some information on the people buried here. Martin was my 5 great grandfather. The family was originally from Canton Berne Switzerland. They later moved to France, and then the entire family, including 11 children came to Wayne County in 1822. Martin died in 1829. Jacob and John were two of his children. They are buried there with their wives. One of the descendents of another son, Martin, married a Johnson. This family owned the land along Fox Lake Road where Johnson's woods is located. Sometime a while back, one family member removed the small individual stones put up the larger stone with all the names. I do not know who takes care of this plot, but I am glad to see it is well maintained. TFTC." congratulations for FTF to bhof53 on 10/20/11
