Twin Bridges Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

NeWa: Ammocan is gone. I am really sad to see this one go. It had a really good run and had the most favorites in Skagit County. And in the top 50 for the State for a long time.

Geocache Description:

You are looking for a geocache at end of the Swinomish Channel boat launch parking under the Duane Berentsen Bridge. The bridge is also locally known as The Twin Bridges.
There is no need to crawl through the bushes to find the cache. It is in a clearing.

Below are some historic maps of the area:

A portion of the original cadastral survey approved in 1874 (Copied from the Bureau of Land Management website). --Click here for the original map--

And a portion of the resurvey approved in 1919 which shows a road and drawbridge over the Swinomish Slough and the railroad bridge and trestle at the top of the map. The drawbridge was located just North of the current Twin Bridges.--Click here for the original map--

In 1937 the dredging of the Swinomish Channel was completed. This makes for an 11 mile navigable channel between Padilla Bay and Saratoga Passage to the South.

This area used to be extensive marshlands. Looking around from the cache site or from the top of the bridge you can see some of the changes in the landscape as shown on these maps.

If you have additional history to share it would be interesting to read in your log below.
