LISTON, a small parish on the southern side of the river Stour,
opposite Long Melford, and 3 miles North by West of Sudbury, has
only 80 inhabitants, and 631 acres of land, belonging to various
freeholders, but Sir Hyde Parker, Bart., is lord of the manor.
Liston Hall, a fine red brick mansion, in a beautiful park, belongs
to Richard Lambert, Esq., but is at present occupied only by
servants. It was built about 50 years ago, by the Hon. William
Campbell, brother to the Duke of Argyll.
The Church is a small antique structure, with a tower and three
bells. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £12, and in 1831 at £165, is
in the patronage of R. Lambert, Esq., and has been in the
incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Wallace, M.A., since the year 1800.
Mr. Thomas Ardley, of Melford, occupies the mill; and Mrs. and Mr.
George Coe are the only resident farmers. Mr. Henry Ardley lives at
the mill.
