Geocache Description:

Roker Park was opened on the 23rd June 1880 when it was donated by Sir Hedworth Williamson with the condition that a bridge be built spanning the Roker Ravine, thus providing access to the land and enabling expansion of quality housing in Roker. Roker Park itself is in magnificent Victorian style and is beautifully landscaped with lovely gardens, a cascading waterfall, a bandstand, a model railway and a pond where enthusiastics sail their model boats and children go fishing with their nets (as I did as a child). Before the 2nd World War the Sunderland Illuminations were prominent within the park and made a comeback with a record 4 million people visiting the lights in 1992 - which coincided with Sunderland being granted City status. To celebrate this every child born in Sunderland in 1992 recieved a commemorative certificate as did my youngest daughter. Within the park itself there is a 'magical' place - The Fairy Dell where as small children my nana would tell us if we were quiet we may see the fairies sitting on their toadstools - so look out for them when you hunt for the cache. (Please note - since I orignally placed the cache the tree it was hidden at has been cut down. However there is still a stump left and the cache is still there. Can I ask fellow future cachers' to replace carefully so as not to expose the cache to muggle eyes: thank you.)
