1963 entstand der Kinofilm "Gesprengte Ketten" ("The Great Escape").
Während des zweiten Weltkrieges flüchteten 76 überwiegend britische Kriegsgefangene aus dem Lager STALAG LUFT III in Schlesien. Dieses Lager war speziell für ausbruchsgefährdete Alliierte Piloten gebaut und von der deutschen Luftwaffe geführt worden. Der Film basiert auf einer wahren Begebenheit, allerdings wurden dem Film fiktive Elemente hinzugefügt, um besser vermarktet zu werden. Der Film entstand unter Anderem in und um Füssen.
Dieser Cache ist der dritte einer Reihe von Caches, die sich mit diesem Thema befassen. Dieses Mal geht es wieder direkt um den hochkarätigen Film von John Sturges mit Steve McQueen, James Coburn, David Attenburough, James Garner, Charles Bronson, David McCallum, Gordon Jackson. Es geht um den australischen Flying Officer Louis Sedgwick "The Manufacturer", gespielt von James Coburn.
Die Altstadt von Füssen bietet auch dieses Mal die Kulisse für die Filmszene als Louis Sedgwick - noch immer auf der Flucht - im Freien sitzt, gemütlich und unerkannt einen Kaffee trinkt und eine französische Zeitung liest. An einen Nachbartisch setzen sich drei deutsche Offiziere. Der Kellner ruft Sedgwick mit einem Vorwand weg von den Kaffeetischen. Anschliessend fährt ein französicher Wagen vor, eine MG-Salve mäht dann die feindlichen Offiziere nieder. Der französiche Kellner und sein Helfer, beide Mitglieder der Resistance, prosten sich zu.
Im Hintergrund sind die alte Füssener Lechbrücke und die Klostermauern von Sankt Mang deutlich zu sehen. Schon nett, wie nah im Film Füssen an Frankreich rückt. Die Lechbrücke ist den "Insidern" als Coburn-Bridge bekannt.
Im Übrigen, Füssen spielt keine Rolle in dem echten Ausbruch. Füssen wurde als Drehort deswegen ausgewählt, weil es für das amerikanische Produktionsteam sehr „deutsch“ aussieht, also dem entspricht, was das amerikanische Publikum unter Deutschland versteht. Ich würde mich über Fotos freuen, die den Szenen im Film nachempfunden sind - nur bitte zeigt nicht zuviel Verräterisches. Bitte eigenen Stift mitbringen.

Gesprengte Ketten #3 „The Great Escape“
In 1963 the film „The Great Escape“ about the breakout of 76 Brittish and Allied Pilot-POWs from the camp STALAG LUFT III during WWII. As usual the old town of Füssen offers the scenes for the movie scene as Louis Sedgwick (James Coburn) still on the run and unidentified, sits comfortably at a coffe table, drinks his coffee and is reading a French newspaper. Three German officers sit nearby. The waiter calls Sedgwick off the coffee table to the phone. Sedgwick, who is very surpirsed to be called to the telephone, his identity should not be known. Right after Sedgewick is out of the way, a french car stops and a machine gun starts rattering and mows Officers of the enemy down. The French waiter and his helpers, both members of the Resistance, drink to their success..
In the background the old bridge and the Lech Füssener monastery of St. Mang is seen clearly. Even nice, how close the film, puts feet to France. To insiders the Lech bridge is known as the „Coburn Bridge“.
By the was, Füssen does not play any role in the real breakout during WWII. The picturesque town of Füssen was chosen as the location, because it seemed to be “very German”, or equivalent to what the American audiance would expect a German town to look like.
