Of COURSE you get a history lesson with this cache too!
Cache located in Plainfield Cemetery. Bring your own
pen/pencil.
The name of this cache is very appropriate. I have much experience
hiding caches in cemeteries...as some of you know. I love the
history they hold, and I always spend time looking at the
headstones before I hide my caches!
This is the largest cemetery in Plainfield. It started as a small
"Church Yard", which was also home to Plainfield's meeting house
(until it was moved to its present location). Since then, the
cemetery has been expanded five different times.
The earliest graves lie in the middle section and in back of the
round drive. The oldest headstone belongs to Experience
Stevens--dated February 20, 1767 (can you find it?). The town
records show that she was the first person to die in Plainfield.
She was first buried near her cabin on Maude Stanley's land on the
River Road. About 1900, the Stevens' residence was sold to William
Orlo Kenyon, and the cemetery plot and stone were moved to
Plainfield Plain Cemetery.
You'll notice at the entrance to the cemetery (where you can park
as well), there is a cobblestone wall with wrought iron gates from
Italy! Hitching rails were added in 1902. There are two plaques on
either side of the gates (on the inside of the cemetery), one for
Mrs. Lucy Chamberlin's parents (Lucy Chamberlin started a trust
fund of $500 for the upkeep of the cemetery in 1889) and the other
plaque for the meeting house.
You'll also notice a very nice (new) stone engraving at the
entrance dedicated to those who have served this country.
Have fun!
Congrats to geokiteguy for FTF!
