A Viagem

O Rio Douro, famoso rio que atravessa
todo o norte de Portugal, inicia a sua viagem em Soria, Espanha,
nos picos da Sierra de Urbión. De todos os nomes que lhe
chamavam pelas numerosas povoações que atravessa, restou o nome
oficial de Douro, pois houve em tempos ouro no seu
leito.

Na verdade, o Rio Douro é o segundo maior rio da península ibérica,
e atravessa não só algumas regiões de terreno extremamente
acidentado, mas também outras de uma beleza incontornável
(património da humanidade, pela UNESCO), como a região de
Trás-Os-Montes, de onde vinha o vinho generoso em barcos
rabelos, para ser guardado e envelhecido nas famosas caves do
vinho do Porto, em Gaia. Hoje, o bom vinho é transportado em
camiões, deixando os barcos rabelos entregues à exploração turística.

Mas o rio não nos oferece só o bom Vinho do Porto, oferece também
locais perfeitos para o aproveitamento de energia, aproveitando o
seu desnível médio acentuado. Ficou pois o "rio indomável"
praticamente domado com a construção de barragens, que hoje nos
oferecem não só energia mas também esplêndidos locais para a
navegação e para a pesca, além de uma beleza
incrível.

Descendo o rio, podemos encontrar uma invejável variedade de
espécies de vida animal, desde aves de rapina guardando os seus
ninhos nos picos próximos, até às carpas, introduzidas após a
construção das barragens, que se alimentam de tudo limpando assim o
leito do rio, muito sujo devido à acção do Homem e das mudanças
climáticas.

Estrategicamente, o rio percorre ainda 112km fazendo fronteira com
a Espanha, o que foi decisivo para a manutenção das fronteiras tal
como as conhecemos.

No local onde se encontrarão, podem observar o Porto e a foz deste
belo rio. Aqui se consuma a sua viagem. Quem sabe se isto não
representará um convite para o subirem um dia...

The Travel

The River Douro, famous river that crosses
the whole north of Portugal, begins its trip in Soria, Espanha,
in Sierra de Urbión. From all names which it was called
in the numerous places where it passed by,
remained the name "Douro", since once there was gold
(in Portuguese "Ouro") in his
margins.

Actually, River Douro is the second biggest river in the iberian peninsula,
and crosses not only highly accidented
terrains, but also lands of an incredible beauty
(humanity's heritage, from UNESCO), just like the region of
Trás-Os-Montes, from where came the vinho generoso (generous wine) in barcos
rabelos (boats), to be stored in the Porto's wine caves
in Gaia. Today, the wine is transported
in trucks, leaving the boats for turistic exploration

But this river doesn't only offer the Porto's wine, it also offers
perfect places for hidraulic energy exploration, thanks
to his average drop. So the "untamable" river
got practically tamed by this dams, that offer
not only energy but also places for
navigation and fishing, and an incredible
beauty.

Down the river, we can find a great variety of
animal species, from eagles guarding their nest,
to carps, introduced after the
dam's construction, that eat everything, cleaning the
river, which is very dirt because of the Man and
of the climatic changes.

Strategically, the river goes 112km in the frontier with
Spain. That was decisive for maintaining the frontier like
we know it today.

In this place we can see not only Porto, but also its mouth.
Here ends its trip. Who knows if this isn't an
invite for travelling up the river, one day...
