The ruin is part of the remains of Luffness Priory. There is a 13th century record of a land grant from King David to the Carmelite Order to found a monastery between Ballencrief and Luffness Castle.
The tomb is thought to be that of an owner of Luffness, one Bickerton, who was armour bearer to Sir William Douglas. Bickerton assassinated Douglas at the Battle of Otterburn (1389) and was murdered in return in the grounds of his castle. Alternatively, it may be the tomb of Sir Henry de Pynke, an English owner of Luffness who threw in his lot with the Bruce and fought for the Scots in the Wars of Independence. (Thanks to the Aberlady Historical Society for the information.)and thanks to Jack Aubrey for the info
