Gesprengte Ketten #2
1963 entstand der Kinofilm Gesprengte Ketten (The Great Escape).
Während des zweiten Weltkrieges flüchteten 76 überwiegend britische Kriegsgefangene aus dem Lager STALAG LUFT III in Schlesien. Dieses Lager war speziell für ausbruchsgefährdete Alliierte Piloten gebaut und von der deutschen Luftwaffe geführt worden. Der Film basiert auf einer wahren Begebenheit, allerdings wurden dem Film fiktive Elemente hinzugefügt, um besser vermarktet zu werden. Der Film entstand unter Anderem in und um Füssen.
Dieser Cache ist der zweite einer Reihe von Caches, die sich mit diesem Thema befassen. Dieses mal geht es direkt um den hochkarätigen Film von John Sturges mit Steve McQueen, James Coburn, David Attenburough, James Garner, Charles Bronson, David McCallum, Gordon Jackson. Die Haupakteure auf der Flucht durch die Altstadt von Füssen sind Roger Bartlett (BigX) und Sandy MacDonald. Wir besuchen die in diesen Szenen gezeigten Orte. Es geht etwas kreuz und quer durch Füssen, weil dieser Cache die Chronologie der Szenen nachstellt.
Im übrigen, Füssen spielt keine Rolle in dem echten Ausbruch. Füssen wurde als Drehort deswegen ausgewählt, weil es für das amerikanische Produktionsteam sehr „deutsch“ aussieht, also dem entspricht, was das amerikanische Publikum unter Deutschland versteht. Ich würde mich über Fotos freuen, die den Szenen im Film nachempfunden sind - nur bitte zeigt nicht zuviel.
Stage1 Eric Ashley-Pit´s End –Schiesserei am Bahnhof / Gunfight at the Station
Big X (Squadron Leader R. Bartlett – Richard Attenborough) wird auf dem Bahnsteig von dem Gestapoagenten Kuhn erkannt. Um ihn und den Flight Lieutenant Sandy MacDonald (Gordon Jackson) zu retten, erkämpft sich Lieutenant-Commander Eric Ashley-Pitt (David McCallum) die Pistole von Kuhn. Im Kampf erschießt Ashley-Pitt Kuhn mit dessen Pistole. Im weiteren Verlauf wird Ashley-Pitt von der Polizei auf der Flucht noch auf dem Bahnsteig erschossen.
Big X und Sandy kommen gerade noch mit dem Schrecken davon. Beide können unentdeckt vom abgeriegelten Bahnhof entkommen.
Stage2 Good luck
Flt Lt Sandy MacDonald und Big X geben sich als französische Geschäftsreisende in Deutschland aus.
Sandy wird zusammen mit Big X als entflohener Kriegsgefangene entlarvt, als ein misstrauischer Zivilpolizist bei einer Kontrolle ihm auf englisch „Good Luck“ wünscht und Sandy - anstatt auf französisch - mit „Thank you“ antwortet. Nach diesem Missgeschick müssen beide zu Fuß durch die Stadt flüchten.
Stage3 Am Pferdefuhrwerk vorbei
Sqn Ldr Bartlett - BigX und Flt Lt Sandy MacDonald rennen den Soldaten davon. Gleich nach der Entlarvungsszene laufen sie an einem Pferdefuhrwerk vorbei. Dabei ist auch das Hohe Schloss von Füssen zu sehen.
Stage4 Keine Versteckmöglichkeit
BigX und Sandy flüchten weiter durch die Stadt. Auf der Suche nach Versteckmöglichkeiten rennen sie durch die Straßen und versuchen, sich innerhalb der Häuser zu verstecken. Allerdings sind alle Türen verschlossen, und sie müssen weiterhin auf der Straße vor den Verfolgern davonlaufen.
Stage5 Sandy's Verhaftung
Sandy rennt mit Big X weiter und wird von einem zufällig vorbeifahrenden Fahrradfahrer umgefahren. Big X kann noch weiter flüchten, allerdings wird Sandy von sieben deutschen Soldaten nach einer kurzen Verfolgung festgenommen.
Genau an der Stelle, wo Sandy festgenommen wurde, steht heute eine Pizzeria, und die Wand an die Sandy von zwei Soldaten „hingedrückt“ wird, ist derzeit die Terrasse der Pizzeria. Wenn Ihr wollt, könnt Ihr euch bevor es weitergeht hier stärken.
Stage6 Big X – über den Dächern von Füssen
Die Dächer von Füssen bieten die Kulisse für die nächste Szene.
Nun da Sandy festgenommen worden war, flüchtet Sqdr Ldr Roger Bartlett alleine über die Dächer der Stadt.
In dieser Szene ist im Hintergrund die schöne Franziskanerkirche zu sehen.
Stage7 BigX: Ach Sie sind Deutscher?
Auf seiner Flucht wird Big X von einer deutschen Patroullie angehalten. „Halt, stehenbleiben, Hände hoch, nicht bewegen“ schreit ein deutscher Soldat. Big X schaut verdutzt, brilliert durch seine schauspielerische Leistung und seiner Sprachgewandtheit und antwortet: „Was soll das?“, woraufhin der Soldat sagt: „You are English.“ BigX antwortet: „Engländer? Sie bedrohen mich mit einer Pistole? Nehmen Sie sie sofort weg.“ Der deutsche Soldat war anscheinend so verblüfft, dass er fragt: „Ach, Sie sind Deutscher?“ Big X erwidert mit einer Kaltschnäuzigkeit: „Selbstverständlich!“ Die Patroullie entschuldigt sich bei BigX, steigt wieder ins Auto und rast davon.
Wenn man den Film im Original mit englscher Sprache anhört, spricht der gute David Attenborough mit einem deutlich vernehmbaren englischen Akzent. Meiner Meinung nach hätte er hier schon auffliegen müssen.
Stage8 Festnahme von Big X
Nicht alle deutsche Soldaten lassen sich durch die Sprachgewandtheit hinters Licht führen. BigX wird von hinten mit „Herr Bartlett“ angesprochen. Bartlett dreht sich um und blickt in die Augen eines deutschen Soldaten. „Your German is good and I hear also your French. Your arms up!“ Der Soldat zieht eine Pistole und richtet sie auf Big X. Nun gab es keinen Ausweg mehr und Big X muss sich seinen Verfolgern endgültig ergeben.

Multi all about the locations in and arround Füssen shown in the movie "The Great Escape". There are two tasks/questions per waypoint. One about the story & one about the location. At times Füssen is loaded with muggles, which has influenced the difficulty rating. You don't have to know the film to be able to cache, but it might help.
Detailed Description:
In 1963 the film „The Great Escape“ about the breakout of over 76 Brittish and Allied Pilot-POWs from the camp STALAG LUFT III during WWII. This camp was specially built for Allied pilots with a high escape risk and was run by the German Luftwaffe. The film is based on a true story, but fictional elements were added for better success. Important scenes in the film were shot in and around Füssen.
This cache is to visit the locations of the top-class film directed by John Sturges and with Steve McQueen, James Coburn, David Attenburough, James Garner, Charles Bronson, David McCallum, Gordon Jackson. Two of the leading figures Roger Bartlett (BigX) and Sandy MacDonald are on the run through the old town of Fussen. We visit the places shown in these scenes. It is a bit of a crisscross through Füssen, because I wanted to keep the chronology of the film.
By the was, Füssen does not play any role in the real breakout during WWII. The picturesque town of Füssen was chosen as the location, because it seemed to be “very German”, or equivalent to what the American audiance would expect a German town to look like. I would appreciate if you upload photos that have been inspired by the scenes in the movie - just please do not show too much.
Stage1 Eric Ashley-Pit's final shootout at the station / Gunfight at the station
Big X (Squadron Leader R. Bartlett - Richard Attenborough) has been recognised on the station platform of the Gestapo agent Kuhn. Lieutenant-Commander Eric Ashley-Pitt (David McCallum) sacrifices himself in order to enable Big X and Flight Lieutenant Sandy MacDonald to escape from the railway station. Ashley-Pit fights for Kuhns pistol and during the fight Kuhn gets shot by his own gun. Ashley-Pitt has to run and in turn is shot by the police on the platform. Both Big X and Sandy can escape undetected from the sealed-off station.
Stage 2 Good Luck
Flt Lt. Sandy MacDonald and Big X pretend to be French business people travelling through Germany.
Big X and Sandy are revealed as escaped POWs, as after passing a checkpoint a suspicious agent wishes them “Good Luck” and Sandy - rather than French – replies with "Thank you". After this blunder, both have to flee and start to run through the city.
Stage3 Past the Horse and Cart
Sqn Ldr Bartlett - BigX and Flt Lt. Sandy MacDonald are on the run through the city. Immediately after the unmasking scene, they run past a horse and cart. Here you also can see the High Castle of Füssen
Stage4 No Hiding Place
BigX and Sandy continue to flee the city. In search of hiding places, they run through the streets and try to hide inside the houses. However, all doors are locked, and they must continue to run on the streets.
Stage5 Sandy's Arrest
Sandy and Big X keep running through the town. Sandy is knocked down by a passing cyclists. Big X can escape, however after a short pursuit, Sandy is captured by seven German soldiers.
Just at the location where Sandy was arrested, there is a pizzeria. If you like, you can strengthen yourself before continuing.
Stage6 Big X – Over the Roofs of Füssen
The roofs of Füssen are shown in the next scene. Now that Sandy had been arrested, Sqdr Ldr Roger Bartlett has to flee alone over the rooftops of the small town.
In this scene you can see the beautiful Franciscan church in the background.
Stage7 BigX: Ach Sie sind Deutscher?
On his flight Big X is stopped by a German patrol. "Halt, stehenbleiben, Hände hoch, nicht bewegen" shouts a German soldier. Big X looks puzzled and replies in German: "Was soll das?", Whereupon the soldier says. "You are English” BigX responds: "Engländer? Sie bedrohen mich mit einer Pistole? Nehmen Sie sie sofort weg."The German soldier was apparently so stunned that he asks."Ach, Sie sind Deutscher?"Big X replies quite cool:"Selbstverständlich!" The patrol apologizes to BigX, then jumps back into the car and races away.
If you see the movie in the original sounds with English languages, the David Attenborough speaks German with a clearly detectable English accent. In my opinion, he would have to be identified as non German.
Stage8 The Arrest of Big X
Not every German soldier can be fooled by BigX's skills. BigX is addressed as "Mr. Bartlett" from behind. Bartlett turns around and looks into the eyes of a German soldier. "Your German is good and I hear also your French. Your arms up! "The soldier pulls out a pistol and points it straight at Big X. Now there was no way out and Big X must finally give up.
