A Furna da Maria Encantada

Há muitos, muitos anos atrás, havia um casal que vivia na zona onde hoje é a Caldeira. Era uma família de posses, com a sua casa e muitos animais domésticos, como era costume então nas casas de campo: vacas, cabras, burros, galinhas e galos,os quais ou ajudavam no trabalho do campo ou davam matérias primas para o vestuário ou serviam de alimento. 

Era uma alegria ouvir o galo cantar durante a madrugada, quando a paz alastrava pelos campos, a lua coalhava a casa de uma luz suave e os restantes animais descansavam, espalhados pela serra. 
       Mas, um certo dia, a horas estranhas, o galo começou a cantar de maneira diferente e com insistência, o que chamou a atenção de Maria, a dona da casa. Cantou assim durante três dias e, escutando bem, percebia-se o que o galo dizia em som estridente: 
 — Foge, foge! Foge!

       Maria compreendeu aquilo como um aviso e insistiu com o marido para que saíssem dali. Ele, porém, não acreditou no que a mulher lhe dizia e recusou-se a que deixassem a sua casa e os seus bens. Ficaram, por obediência ao homem que era o chefe de família. Mas Maria tinha a certeza de que alguma coisa iria acontecer. 

Passados alguns dias, a terra começou a tremer. Botou de si para fora um mar de fogo, lava e pedras. A paisagem ficou totalmente alterada. No lugar onde rebentou o vulcão apareceu a Caldeira e no sítio da casa de Maria formou-se uma furna. Toda a família desapareceu e Maria, que tinha acreditado no aviso, ali ficou encantada para todo o sempre com as suas três filhas: Rosa, Maria e Madalena.

       No Facho, um monte que faz parte da Serra da Caldeira, Maria apascentou os seus rebanhos. Protegia muito bem os seus animais e, sempre que se ouviam latidos, Maria Encantada descia da serra, vestida de trapos, toda esgadelhada, para correr com os cães que lhe queriam comer as ovelhas.

Maria Encantada também tinha as suas galinhas que eram as gaivotas, segundo dizia a rapaziada dos Fenais e de outras zonas do lado nascente da ilha Graciosa. Ninguém se atrevia a tocar-lhes, com medo. 
       Muitas vezes a criançada, receosa, abeirava-se da furna e atirava pedras lá para dentro. Então ouvia-se um som de cacos: era a louça da Maria a quebrar-se. Mas como castigo, as crianças, que percorriam descalças os carreiros que conduziam à serra, davam topadas e feriam os dedos dos pés nas balas da Maria Encantada. 

As vezes, quando o tempo estava bom e o sol quentinho, via-se estendida a roupa que a Maria lavava. 

       Para se alimentarem, Maria Encantada cozia o seu pão e, nessas ocasiões, a Caldeira aparecia toda coberta pelo fumo do queimar da lenha. 

Quem não tiver medo pode, ainda hoje, entrar na Furna da Maria Encantada, indo pela Canada da Furna à direita, antes de chegar ao túnel que dá acesso à Caldeira. Aí verá muitos vestígios dos objectos que ela usou, tais como a pá do forno e a peneira, decalcadas no tecto de pedra.

Many, many years ago, there was a couple who lived in the area where today is the Caldeira. He belonged to a wealthy family, with his house and many domesticated animals, as was usual then in the cottages, cows, goats, donkeys, chickens and roosters, who either helped in the fieldwork or gave raw materials for clothing or serving food. 

It was a joy to hear the rooster crow at dawn, when peace was spreading through the fields, the moon littered the house of a soft light and the remaining animals were resting, scattered through the mountains. 
       But one day, at odd hours, the cock began to sing differently and with insistence, which drew the attention of Mary, the mistress of the house. He sang for three days, and if you listen carefully, you could hear what the rooster said loud and clear: 
 - Flee, flee! Run! 
       Mary understood this as a warning and urged her husband to leave. But he did not believe the woman and told her that he refused to leave their home and their property. They stayed, in obedience to the man who was the head of the family. But Maria was sure something would happen. 
       After a few days, the earth began to shake and spread out a sea of ??fire, lava and rocks. The landscape was totally changed. At the spot where the volcano erupted the Caldera appeared and at the site of Mary’s house a cave was formed. The whole family disappeared and Mary, who had believed in the warning, was forever enchanted with their three daughters: Rose, Mary and Magdalene. 
       At the Torch, a hill that is part of Serra da Caldeira, Maria grazed their flocks. Sheprotected their animals, and whenever they heard barking, enchanted Mary went down the mountain, dressed in rags, her hair all messed up to run the dogs who wanted to eat the sheep away. 
       Enchanted Maria also had her chickens, that were the seagulls, as the guys in Fenais da Graciosa said. No one dared to touch them in fear. 
       Often the children, afraid, draw near to the cave and threw stones into it.Then was heard a sound of shattered: it was Mary’s dishes being broken. But as punishment, the children, who wandered barefoot through the paths leading to the mountains, were wounded in their toes. 
       Sometimes when the weather was fine and the sun was warm, one could see Mary’s clothes laying out in the sun. 
       In order to feed herself, enchanted Maria baked her own bread, and on these occasions, the boiler appeared completely covered by the smoke of the burning of firewood.
       Everyone of you who is not afraid can go into the cave even today.

 If you go to the right before you reach the tunnel that leads to Caldera, then you will see many traces of objects that she used, such as the shovel and sieve, modeled on the roof of stone.
