Take great care at all times as muggles in the form of shepherds
abound in good weather. I placed this on a quick solo motorbike run
from Ficksburg to the Katse dam and back. When I placed the cache
it was freezing cold with a howling wind and no-one around. The
pass at the time suffered from a number of rockfalls due to the
melting snow and the early morning showed icy patches. The views
are breathtaking. The road is popular with bikers who enjoy the
never ending miles of "twisties". The local kids enjoy sweets and I
took a bag full of goodies to hand out.
The Mafika Lisiu Pass, is a spectacular road pass crossing the
Maloti Range, built as part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project
to provide access to Katse Dam. The road is tarred and in good
condition, except under snow conditions.
The entrance to the Bokong Nature Reserve is also located close
by and is one of the highest reserves in Africa. It lies at the top
of the Mafika-Lisiu Pass, reaching an altitude of 3090m above sea
level. There are some outstanding views across the highlands.
However the reserves highlight is the Lepaqoa Waterfall, which
freezes in winter to form a column of ice.
