Statuia Lupa Capitolina din Cluj, colocvial Statuia Lupoaicei,
este o copie a Lupei Capitolina din Roma, daruita în anul 1921 de
municipalitatea din Roma orasului Cluj, ca simbol al legaturii de
latinitate între Italia si România.
Statul italian a facut cadou României în anul 1921 doua copii
ale statuii lupoaicei de pe Capitoliu (Lupa Capitolina). O copie a
fost trimisa la Cluj, iar cea de a doua la Chisinau, drept
simboluri ale unitatii românilor din zonele unificate cu Regatul
Român.
Monumentul este o copie fidela a lupoaicei de pe Capitoliu, cu
Romulus si Remus. Soclul monumentului din Cluj a fost prevazut cu
un basorelief al împaratului Traian, lucrare executata în bronz de
sculptorul Ettore Ferrari (1849-1930), si cu inscriptia ALLA CITTÀ
DI CLVJ, ROMA MADRE, MCMXXI. A fost hotarâta amplasarea
monumentului în Piata Unirii, în fata statuii lui Matei Corvin, iar
festivitatea de dezvelire a avut loc la 28 septembrie 1921, fiind
prezidata de Iulian Pop, primul primar român al municipiului, în
prezenta a numerosi locuitori.
Odata cu Dictatul de la Viena, din 1940, în timpul exodului
fortat al unei parti importante a populatiei românesti, statuia a
luat si ea calea refugiului pentru a fi pusa la adapost. Între
1940-1944, din motive de siguranta, a fost dusa în municipiul
Sibiu. Dupa cel de-al doilea razboi mondial, statuia a revenit la
Cluj, dar noul climat politic existent nu a permis reinstalarea
statuii pe locul original, de aceea ea a fost montata în anul 1967,
la initiativa profesorului Constantin Daicoviciu, în fata cladirii
centrale a Universitatii, unde a ramas pâna în 1973, când statuia a
revenit în Piata Unirii, pe locul ei din fata universitatii fiind
amplasat grupul statuar Scoala Ardeleana.
În anul 1994 statuia a fost luata de pe amplasamentul sau de
la intersectia Bd. Eroilor cu Piata Unirii si a fost înlocuita cu
Monumentul Memorandistilor, ridicat în cinstea memorandistilor care
au avut puterea de a se ridica contra masurilor de deznationalizare
a românilor luate de guvernul austro-ungar. Evenimentul a avut loc
la exact 100 de ani de la osândirea la temnita a memorandistilor.
Statuia Lupoaicei a fost mutata la Muzeului de Istorie a
Transilvaniei, unde a fost restaurata de sculptorul Liviu Mocan,
iar in 2007 de sculptorul Kolozsi Tiberiu, ulterior ea fiind
amplasata la jumatatea Bulevardului Eroilor.
În 2006, dupa începerea santierului de pe Bulevardului
Eroilor, statuia a fost îndepartata de pe amplasament.
Pe 29 noiembrie 2008, Lupa Capitolina a revenit pe soclul sau
de pe Bulevardul Eroilor, în fata catedralei greco-catolice
Schimbarea la Fata.

The Capitoline Wolf Statue (Romanian: Statuia Lupoaicei) in
Cluj-Napoca, Romania is located on Eroilor Boulevard, in the city
center.
After the Great Union of 1 December 1918, the University of
Upper Dacia was organised at Cluj, ultimately being renamed King
Ferdinand I University. It was officially opened on 1 February 1920
in the presence of King Ferdinand and of the royal family.
Representatives of the Allies of World War I and of countries
neutral during the First World War were also present.
The following year, the Italian state made a gift to Romania
of five copies of the Capitoline Wolf. One copy was sent to
Bucharest, to the Roman Square, a second one to Cluj, a third to
Chisinau, a fourth to Timisoara and a fifth to Târgu-Mures; they
symbolised the unity of Romanians from all parts of the country and
their Latinity. The Cluj-Napoca monument, brought to Cluj by a
delegation of 200 Italians, mostly students, is a faithful copy of
the Capitoline Wolf, with Romulus and Remus beneath her. To it was
added a bas-relief of Emperor Trajan, executed by sculptor Ettore
Ferrari, along with the inscription Alla citta di Cluj, Roma Madre,
MCMXXI ("To the City of Cluj, Mother Rome, 1921"). It was decided
to place the monument in Unirii Square, in front of the Statue of
Matthias Corvinus. The first Romanian mayor of Cluj, Iulian Pop,
unveiled the monument on 28 September 1921 in the presence of over
25,000 residents.
After the Second Vienna Award in 1940, a significant part of
Cluj's Romanian population was forced to leave the city; the statue
too was taken away to safety. After the Second World War, the
statue was brought back to Cluj, but the prevailing political
climate did not permit the statue to be put back in its original
location, so it was placed in front of the University, where it
remained until 1973, when the statue was again placed in Unirii
Square. A group of statues of members of the Transylvanian School
was set up in its place in front of the university.
In 1994 the statue was removed from its location at the
intersection of Eroilor Bd. and Unirii Square and replaced with the
Memorandum Signers' Monument, erected in honour of the men who
signed the Transylvanian Memorandum and had the strength to stand
up to the de-nationalisation measures against Romanians being
undertaken by the Austro-Hungarian government. The dedication of
the monument took place exactly 100 years after the memorandum
signers were sent to prison. The Statue of the She-Wolf was moved
to the Transylvanian History Museum, where it was restored by the
sculptor Liviu Mocan, later being placed in the middle of Eroilor
Boulevard.
