The Cave of St. John is
located in the municipality of Domusnovas, province of Carbonia-Iglesias, Sardinia.
The cave is a beautiful
example of karst. The karst
phenomena were generated
by the flow of a subterraneous river that caused the collapse of
limestone rock masses.
The Grotto has been
recognized Natural
Monument in 1999 and is unique in Italy, third in the world
(after France and Australia) to be traveled by car, now closed to
traffic and only open to pedestrians. Entrance is free and the cave
is illuminated from 9.00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The main branch at street level is
850 m long and is fully
crossed by the river St. John that drains the mountain valleys. It
is characterized by stalactites and stalagmites in large rooms, the largest of these
is situated near the north. In addition to the main part of the
grotto branches on two levels (accessible only to experts) make it
a 2000 meter long cave. They consist of a series of tunnels and
passages with the presence of underground lakes and
siphons.
Numerous artifacts have
been found inside the cave, mainly of shards of pottery, indicating
that the cave was used as a shelter. As an evidence of this there
are the remains of pre-nuragic massive
walls which aimed to fortify the entrances. In the south the walls
are still visible.
Near the northern
entrance – thanks to favorable climatic conditions – an
abundant floral hygrophyte has developed.
To complete this Earth
Cache please do the following:
1. Take a guess about
the height of the northern monumental entrance to the valley of
Oridda (from street level to the top).
Email me your answer: Send
Message
2. Without water karst
phenomena wouldn't exist. Estimate the current flow rate of the
river San Giovanni and tell me your answer (meters per second) in
your e-mail.
3. Cross the cave and count the street lamps on both sides of the
road (between the bollards at the entrances) and tell me the number
in your e-mail.
4. Mention in your log
whether you’ve been there alone or with how many others you
have visited this location.
Taking a picture of you
and your GPS in front of the cave or inside is optional but I'd
appreciate any picture uploaded with your log.
Enjoy!
cavità era utilizzata come rifugio.
Buon divertimento!
