Pohjoisrinteellä on varsin jyrkkä kulutustörmä. Kankaan itäpään pohjoisreunalla on kaksi soistunutta lähteikköaluetta. Kahtena erillisenä alueena ovat laajan deltan itäreunalla lähteikköalueet. Näistä toinen on suppainen painanne, jonka pohjalla on lähdealue ja kapea puro.
Harju on geologinen muodostuma, joka syntyy jäätikön poikki kulkevan joen kuljettaman maa-aineksen laskeutuessa sitä kuljettavan kanavan (jäätikön sisällä kulkevan joen) pohjalle, sekä joen suulle (eli jäätiköstä ulostulevan jokiaukon kohdalle). Maa-aineksen kulkua virtaavassa vedessä havainnollistaa allaoleva kuva. Jäätikköjoen purkautumisesta mereen voi syntyä suisto (eli delta). Mikäli purkautuminen tapahtuu maahan syntyy kuivan maan delta (eli sanduri).
Allaolevassa harjun poikkileikkauskuvassa näet esimerkin maa-aineksen kasaantumisesta harjuksi.
Koordinaatit tuovat sinut Säkylänharjun useiden upeiden reittien äärelle. Alueella on 28 kilometriä erilaisia ja eripituisia reittejä, joiden varrella on laavuja, upeita maisemia ja sivistäviä infotauluja (luonnosta ja geologiasta). Yksi laavu sijaitsee aivan EarthCachen vieressä. Lisätietoa (mm. ajo-ohjeet ja reittivaihtoehdot) löytyy erittäin kattavasti täältä.

Säkylänharju (which could be translated as "the Esker of Säkylä") and Virttaankangas (which could be translated as "dry peaty forest of Virttaa") is an esker area dominating its environment. The region is a large ridge with steep slopes, belonging to a series of eskers which run from south-east to north-west. At its highest, the esker goes up to 145 meters from the sea-level.
Little aside from the main region is the Lake Kankaanjärvi, which is the only lake in the esker region. The lake has formed into a kettle hole. The Finnish Defence Forces use the region in its excercises. The core part of the Säkyläharju esker is formed by ridge with rather narrow hilltop and steep slopes. Furthermore, this ridge is partly surrounded by great esker tombs and esker pits.
An esker is a geological formation born when a river flowing through a glacier carries the soil with it, and when the matter gathers (sinks) to the bottom of the channel (i.e. the river inside the glacier) and to the entry of the river (to the place where the river runs out from the glacier). Image below presents the soil flowing with the river. When glacier river bursts to the sea a delta may be born. If the river bursts to dry land the delta is called sandur.
A delta with wide and gently slopes is formed if the glacier does not retreat, whereas retreating glacier forms narrower delta with steeper slopes. The esker points to the direction of the glacier retreat. Usually eskers have a core which consists mostly of rock or gravel, the matter (soil) becoming finer in the borders of an esker. An image below presents an example of matter (soil) gathering into an esker.
The coordinates bring you near to the several marvellous paths at the Säkylänharju esker. There is 28 kilometers of different routes which differ not only by the length but also by profile. Routes will lead you to bivouac shelters (cosy covered fireplaces), wonderful views and informative tablets about nature and geology. One covered fireplace can be found just near the EarthCache. More information such as driving instructions and route descriptions can be found (in Finnish) from here.
