Stamp collecting is one of the world’s most popular
hobbies.
Although the cache is not placed at the posted coords, this is a
quick puzzle for a quick walk to honor one of our
favorite pastimes.
The first postage stamp, the Penny Black, was issued by Britain in
1840 and pictured a young Queen Victoria. It was produced without
perforations (imperforate) and consequently had to be cut from the
sheet with scissors in order to be used.
Since then, so many scenes and likenesses have been used to
decorate this form of currency that we’ve all come to use
almost daily in our lives.
Not much of a stamp collector myself, most of the depictions found
on our stamps were never of that much concern to me. I always did,
however, find interest in the real life people that have been
honored and placed on our stamps.
Our past Presidents have always been of great interest I’m
sure to most of us. Isn’t it curious though, how it was
decided which President should appear on which denomination of
stamp? How was it determined and by whom? Why are certain
Presidents depicted on more than one size and value of stamp?
We all know what stamps have evolved into since their introduction
way back when and their common usage worldwide has simply become a
second nature to most all of us. But with the ever increasing
popularity of “paying bills online” and communicating
between ourselves via texts and emails, one can’t help but
wonder what the eventual fate may be for our stamps and for the use
of them.
Perhaps the stamp collecting hobby will grow in popularity once
again as when it was first introduced as stamps do slowly lose
their necessity in use. Maybe from a collectors standpoint stamps
will increase in popularity for different reasons than simply to
use them.
One of the biggest 20th century surges in stamp collecting was as a
result of one of our stamp collecting Presidents, Franklin
Roosevelt, who ordered a series of stamps during his presidency
honoring our Presidents to date as of that time.
Maybe the stamp collecting hobby could benefit from another
President one day enacting a similar order and new interest will
once again infuse this popular indoor hobby.
