The Texas Spirit Quest
is a series of Caches placed by
many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of
paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have
‘walked’ before
us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities
across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The
cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries,
tombstones and local lore.
This is yet another easy-to-overlook cemetery, located a few dozen
feet beyond the roadside fenceline on private property. A large
handpainted wooden sign should be visible, along with a few large
markers. The site seems a bit overgrown at this time. Local Boy
Scouts put up a fence around the graves back in 1994, although for
unknown reasons some graves were not included in the enclosure.
Restoration efforts took place in 2008 and 2009 to clean up the
location and re-erect toppled markers. Details on the number of
interments are sketchy, but three are known for certain, with the
dates of death being in 1879, 1883, and
1894.
Be sure to pull over as far on the shoulder as possible, as
the road is fairly busy. However, there is no need to clamber over
any barriers and embark on a trespassing spree, as the cache is
located along the fence. And as always--any refinements to the
listed coordinates are
welcomed.
